hospital birth cost
Does anyone remember what your bill was? My insurance covers 80%. I called the hospital to get an estimate and they said "every birth is different, so every bill is different" Just want to be prepared for the sticker shock! Thanks in advance.

Re: hospital birth cost
I think mine was like $14000 or so. Thats with an epi, and DS was jaundice so he was under the lights and spent an extra day at the hospital after they discharged me. Thankfully, all I had was a $100 co-pay.

Re: hospital birth cost
Do you have a deductible? Have you maxed it out for the year? Is your hospital in network? For our insurance, we have a $2000 per person deductible and then in network is 100% but out of network is 80/20 (covered 80% and we owe 20%). For DS we owed $4000 ($2000 each) because each person counts towards the family deductible. Since the hospital we go to is in network we owed the $4000. Without insurance I think the bill came to something like $25,000 including the anesthesiologist who was out of network. However, the year I had DS we maxed the $6000 family deductible so the anesthesiologist was covered. I had a c-section and was in the hospital from Wednesday night until Sunday morning.
For DDs delivery I am anticipating owing the $4000 + the 20% of the anesthesiologist part of the bill (about $300). I think the c-section alone is about $10,000. I would think a regular delivery is less than a c/s. Thankfully DS was in the regular nursery for his entire hospital stay.

Re: hospital birth cost
My stay was about $12,00 for the room, $8,000 for the c-section, $3,000 for epi and then drugs for c-section. My daughters stay was another $5000-$6000 it could have been more. If you want exact numbers I can show you what the hospital billed my insurance and what was actually paid.

Re: hospital birth cost
I haven't gotten my bill in yet but DD's nursery bill was around $6K. I had to call up our insurance provider because they wrote that she was not covered under our plan, so I'm waiting for our new bill in the mail to see what we actually owe.

My deductible is $300 per person and I maxed it already. They pay 80% after the deductible for hospital stay & delivery. My co-pay was $25 for the first prenatal visit and $0 for every one after. My hospital is in network. I have United and I really hate it. I was laid off, and my COBRA payment before the stimulus was $1154 per month. I used to have Aetna before this and it was great.

Re: hospital birth cost
We have the same...it is really expensive. I am sorry. From reading the other posts I think a regular delivery without a child going into the NICU is 14,000 and a c-section delivery is about 25,000. So based on those numbers if you had a regular delivery you would look at owing $2800 and a c/s $5000. Are you sure it is 20% of in network costs? I only ask b/c mine is 20% of out of network benefits. If it is in network then it is 100% covered, but the anesthesiologist is OON. We are in the same boat with you for l&d costs.

Re: hospital birth cost
FYI the 20% is on the total insurance pays, not of the total bill. i.e. hospital submits bill for $10,000, insurance pays $5,000, you are responsible for $100.00.

Re: hospital birth cost
I can't keep track, between the hospital, the anesthesiologist, my OB, and now I just got a bill for DD's hearing exam on the day she was born (I thought this should be included in the hospital bill, it was a routine exam)... I think maybe total we paid out of pocket around $1500 My insurance covers 90%. I had a normal, no complication vaginal birth.

Really?? That would be great! You would think someone at United would be clearer about that.

You are responsible for 20% of the insurances negotiated rate, Not the the full amount
I think the above poster meant $1000 not $100. 20% of $5000 is $1000

Re: hospital birth cost
I had to pay 10%... I had two hospital stays + the birth and I think I owed about $1800. I set up a payment plan with them instead of paying all at once.

Re: hospital birth cost
My total bill for my c-section, hospital stay, some additional medical needs, was in the $25k-$30k range. I am very lucky that I did not have to come out of pocket at all.

Re: hospital birth cost
My bill for the dr alone was 8k, then the hospital was another 8k, and 3k for the anestheologist and thats just the bills we got so far. Luckily i think the only thing im responsible for is the deductible for my little girl.

Re: hospital birth cost
I had a c-section, 2 epidurals and a spinal. Stayed in the hospital for 3 days, and the bill for me & DS's nursery bill totaled almost $30K The anesthesiologist alone was $9K, the hospital room was about $7K...I don't remember the other specifics. Luckily, I didn't have to pay a dime.

Re: hospital birth cost
I just got the admissions paperwork for South Nassau from my dr's office to fill out and they have a sheet which itemizes the costs for room and board.
Room Rate: $2300/day Delivery Room Vaginal: $1085/day C-Section: $1168/day Newborn Nursery: $1900/day NICU: $3200/day
This does NOT include x-ray, laboratory, pharmacy, IV, medical/surgical supplies, blood, operating room or anesthesia.
They show a general 2 day stay for mother and baby for room and board alone is $9675.00.
ETA: If I remember correctly when I had DS the bill total came to approx. $12-13k. I had also had an epidural.
I agree with the other girls...I would call United back b/c I believe you are only responsible for a % of the negotiatied rate between your hospital and insurance carrier.
