Hot Chocolate Question
Since I was a kid, we always used Nesquick to make Hot Chocolate. Just heated up milk and added the mix....and of course mini marshmallows and whipped cream.
Anyway, I bought some this weekend. DH and I got into this ridiculous fight that it's not hot chocolate, it's just heated up chocolate milk. I argued, so if you add milk to swiss miss it's hot chocolate, but if you add milk to Nesquick it's not?
Am I wrong?
It would explain why I don't like hot chocolate unless it's Nesquick

Re: Hot Chocolate Question
it sounds like it would be the same, but I'd have to test that one out myself to see if it tastes the same as Swissmiss, since that's what I'm used to! now I feel like having a cup....mmmmmm

I agree. Swiss Miss (or similar brands) is real hot chocolate to me (add mix to hot water).
Nesquick is chocolate milk, not hot chocolate.

Re: Hot Chocolate Question
none of that...not even swiss miss is "real" hot chocolate.
I'd look at the ingredients list and see how much they differ. settle your argument that way.
then, get some Hershey's cocoa powder, and make as real as the supermarket will allow hot chocolate

Re: Hot Chocolate Question
I've never tried it with Nesquik -- I always use either Hersheys or Ghiardelli (sp?) hot chocolate mix and skim milk.
I can't stand hot chocolate made with water.
I guess I'd have to taste it to see what it's like! I think chocolate milk mix tastes different from hot chocolate mix generally, but I can't imagine what should be so different between the two!
We used to use Hershey's syrup to make chocolate milk as kids. I've always wondered what hot chocolate made with Hershey's syrup would taste like, but I'm afraid I'd be really disappointed.
I say, drink what you like!

the best HC I've ever had is made from chocolate from the chocolaterie Leonidas.
it's so good.
chocolate melted into milk with some sugar (and maybe some spice) is the only real hot chocolate.
this is not
Nesqik sugar, cocoa processed with alkali, soy lecithin, salt, artificial and natural flavors, and maltodextrin
Swiss Miss sugar, modified whey, cocoa (processed with alkali), hydrogenated cocnut oil, nonfat milk, calcium carbonate, less than 2% of: salt, dipotassium phosphate, mono- and diglyderides, artificial flavor, carrageenan. Contains milk.
It looks like Nesquik has more chocolate though (since it's listed second) so in my book, you win.
but it's a shallow victory

I add sugar and vanilla extract. maybe a dash of salt.
you could add chili peper or cinnamon if you are feeling frisky.

Re: Hot Chocolate Question
I always drank Swiss Miss and added water and milk. If I had Nesquick, it was chocolate milk.
My DH makes Hot chocolate for me by heating up milk and Hershey chocolate syrup in a pan. It is delicious!!!!

Re: Hot Chocolate Question
i have to tell you, up until the time my DH and I got married, I never had hot chocolate that wasnt swiss miss. Then I bought a tin of herseys coco for baking and saw the recipe on the back. I made it for DH and myself and I have to say it was the most delicious thing I had ever tasted. Now there's no going back

Re: Hot Chocolate Question
My kids think Warm Nesquick or Ovaltine is hot chocolate.
THIS is the stuff that I drink if I am feeling decadant... Mexican Hot Chocolate:
5 ounces unsweetened chocolate 4 cups milk 2 cups heavy cream 3/4 cup sugar 1 1/2 teaspoons cinnamon 2 eggs 3 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
Melt the chocolate in the top of a double boiler. In a separate heavy saucepan heat the milk and cream on low until hot but not bubbling. When the milk mixture is hot add 3 tablespoons of it to the chocolate and mix well. Blend in the rest of the milk mixture, the sugar, and the cinnamon. In a small bowl beat the eggs and vanilla. Add a tablespoon of the chocolate mixture to the eggs and beat well. Slowly stir the egg mixture into the chocolate. Whisk the hot chocolate briskly in the double boiler for 3 minutes, then serve immediately.
That's not my personal recipe - but it's close enough.

I agree with you, we always heated up milk and Nesquick. I hate prepackaged hot chocolate with water.
With milk is REAL hot chocolate.

Re: Hot Chocolate Question
Nesquick or Hershey's syrup in milk is Hot Chocolate to me. The instant mixes made with water just have powdered milk in them (the whey and non-fat milk in the ingredient statment) but the stuff still tastes watery to me.

Re: Hot Chocolate Question
When I was a kid, the only hot chocolate we ever had was Nestle Quik (it wasn't Nesquik back then), and we used milk. When I was older, I started buying Swiss Miss and it was weird for me to use boiling water for it (but I did).
Now, I have the best of both worlds. I boil water and add a little splash of Bailey's Irish Cream (although I guess Bailey's isn't much of a dairy product ).

Re: Hot Chocolate Question
OMG this is a funny thread.....
to me, hot chocolate has to be milk based.... sorry swiss miss advocates... no powdered milk in my life
actually REAL hot chocolate (in the spirit of german chocolate shops) is hot milk + a shot of cream + unsweetened cocoa + melted bittersweet chocolate shavings
I think nesquick is much less potent, yet still closer to the original.
when I make it at home, I use the above recipe (minus the cream... I'm not THAT decadent at home )
truly, the only difference between swissmiss and nesquick is the dried milk (just add water) vs not (adding real milk)
