Hot-Tub owners...
Is it worth it?
We're getting ready to redo our back patio and we're considering a hot-tub. We need to make the decision prior, because should we go that way, it will need to be incorporated into the patio design.
Do you use it often enough to jusify the expense? What's the maintenance like?

Re: Hot-Tub owners...
Are you a chemist? I feel like the "levels" are always off. When we first bought our hot tub we thought we would go in year round. We will go in it in the spring and late fall but there is no way that I'd go in it in the middle of winter. I wouldn't be able to handle the cold, wet walk into the house. That being said, it is very relaxing. I will come out with wine, cheese and crackers, a good book, my cell and house phone. Ahh!

Re: Hot-Tub owners...
Ours came with out house and we don't love it and don't use it often. I'm not one for being we when it's freezing cold out so we drained ours for the winter. You have to manage the chemicals every week. I don't know. I thought it would be awesome to have one but now I'm like eh I could live without it. I would much rather have a pool.

Re: Hot-Tub owners...
my parents have both a pool and a hot tub... and they LOVE the hot tub sooo much more!! they get a lot more use out of it... they use it in the fall and spring, and even the winter ( theres nothing like sitting out there when the snow is falling on you!! ) the maintenance isn't so bad for them... a lot less than a pool.

Re: Hot-Tub owners...
We absolutely LOVE our Hot Tub! We use it at least 5 times a week.
I love hanging out with DH drinking a glass of wine and relaxing after a long week.
Itis great for sore muscles too (I work out and love getting in when I am sore after a hard workout.
Here are some of my posts about our hot tub ( we got it last July 4th weekend):

Yes totally worth it. Maintenance is next to nothing. We use it often and our guests like to use it as well. We turn the heat down and the kids love it. I would highly rec Coleman Spas on 110, that's where we go ours from.

We love ours, and purchased it 5 years ago.
We really get use out of it during the fall and winter.

Re: Hot-Tub owners...
My sister has one and regrets buying it... especially after her 12 year old went in it with his friend when no one was home (the babysitter was on her way there from the 4 year old's school).

Re: Hot-Tub owners...
I'm so torn. I've always wanted one, but DH always runs hot, so he doesn't find them as inviting.
We're putting in french doors in our master bedroom and extending the new patio past our room. I figured now would be the time to put one in near the master bedroom, that way we wouldn't have to walk far in the colder temperatures.
BUT I wonder how much we'll really use it...will it end up being a 10,000 dollar bird bath.

Re: Hot-Tub owners...
I was curious about this too, we were planning on having a hot tub built in the corner of our yard above our built in pool (that isnt in yet)so it will flow into the pool- i think my DH wants to do it more for the "look" - he wouldnt do it if it werent attached to the pool for the same reason as your DH, he just doesnt think its so inviting. im really not sure how much we are really going to use it, the friends I have that have them say its more of just a novelty-they couldnt wait to get it bc they swore they'd use it all year round, id say 90% hardly ever use it all all after 2-3 yrs.

Re: Hot-Tub owners...
I love it & once you get the levels set it is not too hard to maintain. The heating bit does get costly though.

Re: Hot-Tub owners...
We absolutely love ours - we use it all year round, even when we have to brush the snow and ice off of it!! Our model is always "on" so you never wait for it to heat up. Has a special cleaning thingy and the chemicals have not really been that big a deal. We think it's one of the best gifts we've ever bought ourselves!

Re: Hot-Tub owners...
We got the hot tub but DH does all of the chemicals so I can't complain about all of the work. DH mostly uses the hot tub...I kind of find it boring just to sit there unless I have a drink The killer to me is how much more our electric bill has soared since having one. It does look nice in the backyard with all of the water being lit up and I know a lot of people that always go in their hot tub. It's a toss up.
