He is responsible for my grandmother losing all of her money at age 85, my dad losing his IRA, and me losing any inheretence money I would have gotten that I was hoping would pay for Cailen's college.
I hate that man.

Everytime I read an article about this complete loser, I think of you and your family and I get so sad. I feel like you and your family should go to that beautiful penthouse of his and just walk in and say "this bedroom is ours b/c you probably paid for it with our money"!

Yea I wish i can sit in a penthouse on house arrest. I feel bad for everyone who lost so much becuase of this fool but the sentence should have been harsher to teach a lesson to others who are or were thinking of doing the same.

Why is even allowed to keep this penthouse. Shouldn't it be seized? It's most likely paid for with money he stole from the poor people he frauded (i'm sure that's not a word...but i'm sure you know what I mean)
I feel for everyone who was a victim of this POS!
Seems nobody feels sorry for this guy:
Madoff was unable to meet the bond conditions set last week by a federal magistrate which required him to get four people to sign his personal recognizance bond. According to the U.S. Attorney's office, only Madoff's wife and brothers were willing to sign the document.

He should def rot in prison... I wonder if he'll be under suicide watch. From the tone of the article it sounds as if he's given up, on what I have no idea.
It's an incredible story. Incredible to have that type of scheme going to the tune of $50 billion dollars. I'm amazed by it.
I'm so sorry for your family Liza.

I think they will eventually seize all his assets but he has only been charged with crimes, not yet convicted. They can't even figure out who owned what at this point. I hope investors get some of their money back. He had people's entire life long savings!

I'll be surprised if he doesn't make an attempt to take off for Isreal.
I hope the fed have someone watching him 24/7.
I'm amazed at the number of people who gave him EVERYTHING to invest versus diversifying.
And I know a few financial publications like Fortune and Barron's called him out for his Ponzi sceme over the years, why didn't anyone listen?

It's not his sentence.
It's a compromise between being free on bond and having to sit in jail. I believe he had the $$ to post bond but not enough signatures for some other required document. Instead of staying in jail while awaiting trial, he will be on house arrest. Had one more person signed, he'd be walking around with no monitoring whatsoever while awaiting trial.
ETA - mssissy, I just saw your other post - sorry.
Also I'm not condoning the man's actions by ANY stretch.

This man should hand over all of his money and assets to the people that he is responsible for defrauding...he should be left pennyless and on the street.

I am assuming that investors liked what they saw and never really questioned it. Regulators did the same thing.

I wonder if he put all of his assets in his wifes name so he can claim poverty. My DHs cousins are retired and were well off but lost everything because of this man. I feel so badly for them. But I still wonder why they did not diversify.

What motive would the regulators have for ignoring red flags?

If any of the money is in his wife's name, I don't think they can touch it. She probably opened a swiss acct.

I don't think there was a motive for ignoring the signs that something was up. I just don't know why 12% return, year after year after year without fluctuation, was never questioned by regulators. I don't know why the returns were never questioned by the investors attorneys, accountants, etc. Maybe it was. I know of 2 investors personally that were speaking with other investment professionals who questioned this. How is it possible...now we know it wasn't.
