House Hunters

After watching a slew of HGTV and a ton of show's about house hunting, I have a question.

Why does the current decoration of the house matter so much?

Are people really that unimaginative that they cannot see past ugly furniture and Chintz curtains?

Re: House Hunters

I can get beyond odd colors, but when it comes to wallpaper, you have to think of the amt of time it will take you to take it all off, seal the wall, sand it down, prime it, then paint it.

And if they have more than one layer of wallpaper, god help me!

Re: House Hunters

My only issue is wallpaper and paneling. It is sooo much work to take down, and redo walls, sometimes the sheetrock needs to be replaced, I guess thats where my imagination stops. Everything else, who cares!

Re: House Hunters

I feel the same but looking at it from others point of view, a lot of people want a house that is "move in ready." Also a lot of people have no imagination at all and don't know how to look at the "bones" of the house

It always annoys me when people complain about the wall color. Get some new paint and cover it up!!

But I feel like those are always the people that already have a low budget for the area they are looking at....

Re: House Hunters

I'm trying to break my DH from a lack of imagination. Everything can be changed, it just depends on time and expense. Time we have. Expense, not so much! So for us, we need to be careful if we think it will be something that has to be changed soon.

The shows are taped after the homeowners already purchased a house so I think all the "umm, I don't like the paint or the carpeting" comments are just for chit chat.

they were with my Dad's house- but that wouldn't stop me from buying the house if I didn't like it

and even though the shows are taped after they buy- there had to be a reason why they didn't pick the house in the first place

I am not only talking about house hunters (so bad post title, sorry).

I am aslo talking about Designed to sell and all the shows that talk about what you need to do to get ready to sell your house. Sometimes I feel like it is just overboard. But I guess since so much effort is put in, it must have an impact on the buyers.

And the window treatments are only included if you put it in the contract. But most people will leave them b/c chances are they won't work in their new home if they are custom.

There is a whole new area of real estate called "staging" People have actually started their own businesses telling people how to sell their homes. C'mon aren't we all suckers for advertsising, bright colors, pretty things? Why do you think there are window displays and millions spent on advertising every year. It is the same with houses take two homes, same price, same taxes and property. If one is cleaner, more well decorated, etc. it can help people visualize what it will look like in the future. This is human nature.

I know exactly what you mean, its crazy that people change the way furniture is arranged and put up some new paint and a house that was previously unsellable is now has 5 offers after one open house...

Re: House Hunters

its like flip this house on TLC - they always go buy what the agent says it will be put on the market for - id love to see what it actually sold for!

Property Ladder on TLC is much more realistic, they usually show people sitting on houses they can't sell.

Please, FH and I saw houses that had holes in the walls, let alone me not loving the paint color Chat Icon

It totally makes sense...

But I would rather you skip the painting and primping (b/c I am probably going to paint over it anyway) and pass that $1000 you just saved on to me when I buy your house....

This is why I can't stand that show! People say the dumbest things like 'I don't like this paint color." or "I don't like this carpet." Why would you keep previous owner's carpet anway? Ew!
