House Hunting This weekend

WOW we saw I think 20 houses and one after another were just not the house. There was one but it's at the top of our price range. Chat Icon We just couldn't believe how people live. Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon There were a couple that had potential, but there were two that smelled so bad I had to hold my nose.Chat Icon Chat Icon

Anyway, does anyone have any thoughts. We looked in Levittown and Hicksville mostly. The "Levit" house are design oddly and have very small bedrooms upstairs due to the fireplaces in most of those homes.

I believe you are talking about the Levitt ranches. They have the fireplaces and I agree, I don't care for the ranches floorplan. But I do like the Levitt capes which have a much more traditional floor plan both up and down.

Hi Kerry! Yes the Levitt Ranches. Just didn't care for the upstairs that much. Some of them were bigger downstairs and really doable, but some just weren't. And we went from one to another and just disappointed. I think we need to stick with Capes or regular Ranches in other towns maybe.

Where are you buying your house? You are closing really soon. You guys must be so excited! Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: House Hunting This weekend

House hunting can be very frustrating.. the best advice I can give is to be patient.. and try to see past "cosmetic" things that can be changed - paint, wallpaper, etc. It truly is disgusitng how some people live, and its appalling they they are trying to sell their home looking and smelling the way you do.
Keep looking though, you will start to get a sense of what you like and it will start to get easier to see past the grossness and what a house's true potential could be.
Good luck!

where else are you looking?

East Rockaway (I live here) and Island Park both have a lot of houses that are reasonable priced (under 4/low 4s...guess reasonable is subject to opinion though) and taxes are low.

Re: House Hunting This weekend

Danielle and I live in a levitt cape. I love the layout much better than the ranch. We didnt like the ranch, because on most of them you walk right into the kitchen. On the cape you walk in to the house in the middle. The layout of my house is Kitchen on the right - living room on the left.

Dining room or master bedroom behind that - to the right is a guest bedroom and the bathroom.

The stairs are in the middle and we have 2 bedrooms and a closet upstairs.

Our master which is upstairs is a lot bigger than the original master which is now our dining room.

Thanks, I'm goint to keep that in mind when looking any further in Hicksville or Levittown.Chat Icon I think I have always liked the set-up of capes better anyway. This was a weekend of "Open Houses" only, so we had no idea what we were walking into, but now we need to get outselves a Realtor and work from there I think. As least you can tell them what you want and don't want, unlike going to an open house.

Those are both nice towns too. It just that we work on the North Shore and it takes so long to get to the parkways, but I do like both of those towns. We might just have to look there too. Chat Icon I don't want to base everything on where are jobs are, but my house is more important. Thanks for the thoughts. Chat Icon

What I can say about the Levitt houses is that yes some of them are still the standard houses - but many people did extensions and added rooms - and it makes a big differerence. If you like the neighborhood and the area you should keep looking there because you never know when you will find an extended one that you will fall in love with!

They should also list it on the MLS listing if there is an added room to the house.

Good luck!Chat Icon Chat Icon

We looked in those areas and surrounding...needless to say we decided it was 110% worth it for us to extend our search to Suffolk.

You get a MUCH better home for your money not to mention more land if that's something you're interested in too - we were.

Good luck!Chat Icon Chat Icon
