How about car insurance???? The people that don't have it cost us all....
Should the government take that over too?
Where do we draw the line? Help me to understand how much we should want to be governed?

Re: How about car insurance???? The people that don't have it cost us all....
Here's how, in the USA Health insurance IS OPTIONAL, car in insurance IS NOT.
HealthCARE Should not be optional and is NOT optional in this country which is crystal clear when you enter our emergancy rooms & see them overflowing with illegal immigrants.
Health Insurance in the US should be each person's individual responsibilty. Not the governments.

I disagree, driving a car is often a case of life or death & many times the financial burden of that death is placed on us because the driver was unisured. So I ask again, because "it costs us all" to have unisured drivers, should we expect the government to step in?
ETS-to clarify people have mentioned we must keep health insurance regulated because americans are too stupid to know right from wrong & "it will cost us all"

People choose to drive a car - they don't choose to have a body!

it is the government's responsibility when a person goes to a hospital and can't pay. Social workers get some of these people on medicaid. If the person can't pay because they don't have a way to pay, they declare bankruptcy, maybe they lose their home, assets..they are sick so they can't work..no problem, apply for SSD or SSI...it's the gov'ts problem no matter what.
eta: it's not the way i want to go, but this is happening right now.

exactly, I agree with you & I know you've experienced a great deal of this with your brother.
I'm asking though, where do we draw the line? To say "because it costs us all" isn't enough for me. Its time to change the culture of this country, we were once HARDWORKING, SELF-RELIANT people. Lets work on getting back to that place. Stop making excuses for the stupidity of the last few years & lets move FORWARD. The "CHANGE" needs to come from within US!

oh I agree. But sadly, there are those that will never do it. It will still end up on the government and then on us.
And the gov't programs for the sick, elderly and poor are not complete and sometimes take way too long before it's too late.
That's a whole other topic.

Actually that's a state not federal mandate. Car insurance is required in NYS, not every state in the country.
I also agree with other posters who say driving a car is a luxury. It is in no way a necessity; it is not a matter of life and death. If you cannot aford a car and the things that go with it, live on a public transportation line or in an area where you can walk.
Because we end up paying for people breaking the law (driving w/o insurance) does not equate to it should be mandated.
