How bad is a colposcopy?
I had 2 abnormal paps this year and my gyro wants one done. He said it is negative for HPV so that is good. Anyone been through this? I have had a few other "female" tests and am petrified! Give it to me straight on what to expect!

I had one about 8 or 10 years ago because of abnormal paps.
Honestly the whole thing was done in about ten to fifteen minutes. It was a little uncomfortable but not painful - just felt like a more thorough exam that lasted longer than a regular exam. Afterward - mild cramping, a bit of bleeding, pretty much like a period. Nothing gross and nothing that a few ibuprofen couldn't take care of. I didn't go to work after, but that was because my appointment was in the middle of the day. If it was and early appointment, I would have definitely been able to go to work after.
The best thing to do is relax and focus on your breathing. The less tense you are, the faster they can just get it over with.

I'll be honest .. It depends on the dr.
I had abnormal pap 10+ years ago and needed a colposcopy. it was pretty painful. She took 4 pieces and after she was done, I had to lay on the table for 1/2 hr bc I felt like I may pass out.
I had cryo for pre cancerous cells and she said I'd need another colposcopy in 6 months. I didn't want to do it. A friend of mine referred me to the dr who did her LEEP procedure. He was a gyn oncologist.
Him... He did a colposcopy once a year for 3 years. It was a pinch. Hardly even that.
So it really depends on the dr.

This was pretty much my experience. Worrying about it beforehand was much worse than the actual experience

The first time I had it it sucked!!!!!! I have had it done a few times after and it wasn't as bad. Maybe because I prepared myself mentally for the pain!

Mine wasn't that bad. I was so nervous beforehand. I went right back to work afterwards.

I have had 2 -- Each time they clip a piece it pinches... Kinda like if you clip your skin when you cut your nails kinda feeling. I had period like cramps after -- and you bleed.. but for me it wasnt period bleeding. They warned me before thankfully -- but it almost looked like coffee grinds. Good Luck.

I've had a bunch! They're not that bad. A little discomfort, menstrual cramping, but that's it!

I had one about 10 years ago- wasn't bad at all. Just wear a panty liner after! I didn't have any issues- over quick!

Thanks ladies! Had it done the other day. Wasn't fun but def was not as bad as I thought. I did bleed/spot for almost a whole week after. Nasty brownish stuff was coming out. So gross! My dr. did prep me for that thankfully.
