What are the downsides? There are children and dogs in the family.

Does anyone here live on a main road?

Re: How bad is it to live on a main road?

I never lived on a main rd, but it is one of the things that was on our "absolutely not" list.

We just felt it would be too much noise, traffic, not good for resale value, etc...

i agree w/ the noise and traffic. you don't have much privacy either and depending on how busy the road is, it might be hard to get in and out of the driveway.

Friends of ours are on a main road as well as another couple. There is so much noise as one of them is a truck route. The other is set almost 1/2 acre back but I just feel like they have 3 kids and they never can go to the neighbors house or down the block to play with the other kids.

Yes, that is another thing, you lose out on that "block" feel.

very, right now our apt is on a main road and i hear the bus go by every morning, it s*cks. And you always here cars going by with broken/farting mufflers, loud music, speeding cars going down the block. When we move into a house definatly not going to be on a main rd.

It depends on what you consider a "main road". I live on a corner. The front of my house is on a side street, but the side is on a road that is a pretty busy thoroughfare through our area. It intersects with merrick road, we're about halfway between merrick and the bay. The noise of the traffic isn't bad, and parking isn't an issue here.

I wouldn't want to live on a main road like jerusalem or merrick for many of the reasons already listed.

I think it all depends on what your use to...A Friend grew up on a main road and now she just brought her first house on the same main road. I guess it is not a problem for her.

I used to drive to Stony Brook and always felt bad for the people who would hold up traffic or have to sit in their driveway waiting for traffic to hold up because there were a million cars on 25A. So not getting out of your driveway would be a negative for me. Also, I would be so paranoid if the dog ran out the front door. All the cars would make me very nervous.

Re: How bad is it to live on a main road?

Three words....

Location, Location, Location....

A main road is also on my "NOT" List..(especially with a little one coming)

It's also harder to sell a house on a main road - something to think about for the future.

Same for us. We looked at a few houses on or backing main roads and walked away from them - the noise, traffic and resale value being the 3 hugest factors in those decisions.

Re: How bad is it to live on a main road?

Dont do it, I lived on a main road in queens - terrible under the L and then my parents bought in Wantagh on Wantagh Ave. - another main road- it sucked!!!!!!!! I hate hate main roads- the noise- traffic- cant play outside in front- no parking and we lived on the corner too and it was difficult to park, and even if you play on the side cars turning off the main road always turned so damn fast giving my mom heart attacks we were gonna get hit- had so many cats run over b/c they run out and welp main road 40 MPH no mercy the drivers have. Our house now is not and I am so thankful what a difference!!!

Re: How bad is it to live on a main road?

My starter home was on a busy road (Montauk Hwy) and I had absolutely no issues with it at all. There was no traffic noise, we made a circular driveway so guests would have a place to park and be able to pull out easily, my nieces and nephews all enjoyed my backyard, etc. The only reason I moved is because I'm starting a family and needed more room. I also wanted to upgrade bc the house I am in now is likely the house I'll stay in until retirement. Unless you have children that are old enough to walk to their friends houses or ride bikes, I don't really see it being a big issue. JMHO!

Oh, and just as a side note to all of those saying resale is an issue -- we owned the house for two years and sold it for more than double what we paid for it. Granted, it may have taken a little bit longer to sell bc the audience looking at homes on busy roads is smaller, but we made out like bandits on that house.

ETA: It may depend on which busy road you're talking about also.

The only way I would have even CONSIDERED living on a Main Rd. is b/c I was contemplating having a private practice from home, so that would have been convenient for my clients & stuff.
I'm so glad we chose NOT to live on one, being on a quiet street is so much more peaceful.Chat Icon

I could never do it...I live right off of a main road and its bad enough I can't imagine living on the main road itself.

We live on a semi-main road, and it is all of these concerns and more....people are constantly using oru driveway to turn around in, which makes em very nervous. I am always freaking that the dogs will get loose & end up in the street. There is always traffic, and on top of that we have had to replace our shrubs, lighing and garbage cans a few times in just over a year becuase they get runover, damaged, or stolen on a regular basis.

Also, I feel like people are VERY aware of when we are home or not, which I do not like.

I do have to say though, it depends on the neighborhood, and the street, as well as how visible the house is from the street. We are currently in Amity Harbor, so there is quite a bit of traffic & forget it near haloween or when a stupid movie about the hosue comes out. I have a friend who live on glen cove road in east hills, and you completely forget that she is on a main road once you are in the house.
