I tried converting it through itunes, but it says it's "protected" and cannot be converted.

I am not sure that you can. I remember reading somewhere that Apple doesn't want their songs to be played on MP3 players, since that technology isn't theirs. I own an MP3 player and it specifically says it is not compatible with ITunes.
ETA: I would think somewhere, some super-tech person figured it out - did you try googling it maybe?

There is a long way, which is the only way I am able to do it. Burn it onto a cd. Then rip it onto your hard drive (windows media can do that). Then you can convert the tunes into mp3. I know there are free programs that can do it, but i forget which ones. I'm on my way out, otherwise I would search for you. I don't remember if windows media player can do it.
