How can I find a reputable breeder?
My husband and I are finally in our new home, and would now like to complete our family (for now, anyway!) with a pug puppy.
We looked in the newspaper, and noticed that lots of the ads said "AKC". I've never owned a dog, so I'm not quite sure what to look for. BUT, I do want to make sure that we buy from someone is reputable.
Thanks in advance for all your help!!!

How about doing a search on petfinders.com? There are so many great pups and dogs that need homes there. Plus, they have a lot of pedigrees.

Also breed specific clubs are good sources, here is the one for pugs (they also have rescue info):

Re: How can I find a reputable breeder?
Thanks so much for all the help and advice! I checked out some of the sites, and now know what to ask breeders, and what they should be giving me before I take the puppy home.

Re: How can I find a reputable breeder?
Major things to look for in a reputable breeder:
- they should not "always have puppies available."
- they will require a spay/neuter contract for their pet-homed dogs
- they will take the dog back in ANY event where you cannot keep their dog
- they will provide records of health tests, vet care & lineage health
- they will interview you as much if not more than you interview them
- they will NOT breed "designer mixes," and will not breed more than 2 - 3 breeds of dogs (ie they will not breed Maltese AND Shih Tzus AND Boxers AND pit bulls....)
- they will not send show potential dogs to a pet home.
I agree, check out Petfinder.com first. It will take the same effort and time to find a good rescue as to find a good breeder.
Good Luck
