How can I get the best rates on a car rental
We are planning on a three week road trip in July and are considering renting a small car for better mileage and to save on the wear and tear on my own van. Any suggestions on how to find a promo or get the best rates? I went to all the websiites and the best deal I can find is $632. I would love to do better.
I checked Costco's and their price is $605.. I am not a member and their rate isn't worth the added membership fee.

Car rentals are expensive in the tri state area, and seldom have deals unfortunately. With that said, I think you are looking too far in advance. I know when we go to FL, the ideal time to book is a couple months out. I find anything more than that is $$$

You can try booking through AAA or overstock.com. Would you be willing to use Priceline & make a bid? As long as you know what cars are in the car class, a rental car is a renal car. Sign up for the rental companies loyalty program - you might get some coupon codes.
Also, mousesavers.com has a lot of car rental codes that can probably be used for rentals anywhere.
Make sure you gt unlimited mileage - in the back of my head I think that could be an issue renting around here. Maybe consider different rental locations.

Thank you Christine. You make some excellent points. I appreciate your advice. As for unlimited mileage, I already found that to be true. Enterprise, so far, had the best rates but offered only unlimited miles if traveling in NY or surrounding states.

We get the best rate we can a few months out then check and recheck the site. It ALWAYS goes down, and we rebook the lower price.

They do all the work for you and list all the coupons available.
