How can you research if an attorney is good?
We need a few attorneys at the moment for various things, one of which is eldercare. We asked a few friends for recommendations, but since it is a "newer" law no one had any recs. The hospital where my grandmother was just released from offered a few names and I wanted to know how to find out about them and maybe do a search if there is someone better?
TIA.
(we are in Nassau County if that makes a difference)

I think the best way is to ask an attorney you already know. If you already have one for real estate, for example, he or she would most likley know someone for elder law. It's a smaller community that you would think and they all pretty much do referrals for each other.
Good luck.

There are a few ways but honestly referrals are the best way. You can check with the Nassau County Bar Association they do give referrals. You can try to check them out on Martindale Hubbell if they list themselves to check out how long they have practiced and what areas they specialize in - but word of mouth is really best (they DO rank them based on other attorneys recommendations - an AV rating is the best but not everyone is rated it is an optional thing I believe). You could call NCBA and get some recs from them and then ask people if they know them.
Unfortunately I don't know anyone in this area or I would recommend someone.

If you don't have a word of mouth referral, I would go the county bar association route. At minimum you will get someone who practices in the area you specify and is in good standing with the local bar association.
