How did everyone's turkey turn out?

With the talk of which kind of turkey people were getting, I thought a follow up post would be helpful. Where'd you get your turkey, what kind (organic, kosher, frozen or fresh?), how'd you prep and how did it turn out?

I got mine from a local farm. Organic/free range/fresh. Just dry seasoned with salt, pepper, herbs, garlic and olive oil, and roasted at 350 degrees. It turned out great! I got a lot of compliments on the flavor and how juicy it was. I would spend the extra $$ again next year.

Ours turned out great. We bought a king Kullen turkey. Cooked it for 1 hour at 350, breast side down, then flipped it and cooked until the thermometer said it was done. The pop up timer did not pop. Dh did not brine it. He smothered butter on it about 2 hours into cooking. Dh carved it when it was out for and hour.

The turkey we had was made on the BBQ and it was great.
I personally have never had a problem with turkeys being bad. I guess it all depends on the type you have though.

Re: How did everyone's turkey turn out?

I purchased a frozen 18 pound butterball turkey and it came out great. I thawed as directed and watched a couple of YouTube videos for seasoning and tips for a moist turkey. I never basted before and I'm not sure if that helped but I will do the same next year. I put the turkey in for 2 hours uncovered to get that brown crispy skin then I covered it for another 2 1/2 hours approx. basting it every 30/45min. Turkey was placed on the bottom rack since I had a tray holding it in the pan (used for circulating the air around turkey). I was really pleased with the outcome coming from a frozen butterball. I do want to try a fresh Evan and Bells turkey for next year.

Wow, never thought to use the barbeque! How do you do this exactly?

We got a fresh Murrays turkey from Fairway. Salt water brine overnight. Smothered in butter, herbs and stuffed with more herbs, celery and onion. Breast side down then flipped 2/3 the way through. Smelled amazing but had a weird consistency. I think the salt water brine was the problem for some reason. Kind of bummed. Luckily all sides were delicious! Embarrassed to admit I just had sausage stuffing for breakfast!

I didn't do it but my friend who made it for all of us said they just put it in there, in an aluminum pan on 350 for about 3 hours.

Re: How did everyone's turkey turn out?

It came out really good.

Butterball Frozen 20 lb.
Washed it, dried it, slathered it in a stick of butter (Under the skin too) salt & pepper. Oven Set @ 325 - Breast side down the whole time. Tented the first 3 hours, uncovered the last hour & 15 minutes. Rested 45 minutes before carving to let juices go back into meat.

It was so juicy! Even those who normally stay away from the white meat, kept eating it.

We deep fried ours...it came out great!!!

I had gotten a frozen 15 lb turkey from a farm pick up I use. We slathered it with a blend of peanut oil, kosher salt, pepper, ground thyme, paprika, smoked paprika, chili powder and old word seasoning. Wiped it off the morning of and thoroughly dried it. It cooked so much quicker and was just a fun experience.

We reheated our sides on the bbq so we didn't turn on the oven for anything...cleanup was a breeze!

We used a fresh brined turkey from Whole Foods. DH used an infrared oiless fryer and it was delish! The wings are drumstick were on the well done side, which is just how I like it, and everything else was nice and juicy.

I really love this idea! So do you also just put it in a pan just like you would the oven and leave it in the BBQ?

How did everyone's turkey turn out?

we do a Thanksgiving Round 2 with my mother in law every year , the Saturday following thanksgiving. My mother in law usually makes the turkey and the sides but we wanted to give her a break as she is getting older and it is more difficult for her to handle the turkey.

anyhow, it was my first year making a turkey. She picked up a frozen turkey which had listed in its ingredients what seemed like brining ingredients. - I was planning on brining my own but since it already seemed brined, I just brought it to room temperature , slathered with butter, salt, pepper and a little dried time and popped in the oven.

425 for the first half hour, and then I lowered to 350. at some point, I flipped the bird breast side down b.c the breast was cooking fast. I eventually turned it back to breast side up, basted, covered with foil , and then removed foil toward the end.

it was delicious!! I was quite impressed with myself lol
