Re: how did you decide which crib mattress to buy?

we narrowed it down based on firmness, content and feel.

First decide if you want foam or innerspring, then it gets easy. Foam is HEAVY, and innerspring are easier to manuever to change sheets. Foam is also more expensive. We asked an associate for help too.

We chose Sealy firm mattress, an innerspring, it's firm but comfy. Our mattress was 130 bucks at BRU.

I believe inner springs is better, foam can deteriorate and I feel that if the baby rolls over, it's more of a suffocation hazard.

You want FIRM so that way the baby does not sink into it.

-outer material [cloth can get wet and thus the inside can as well...so it's a great idea to stick with vinyl. you'd be surprised how your little angel can soak right through a diaper, pjs, crib pad, sheet and mattress pad and you still find a puddle on the mattress]

-price...i went with something in the middle of the range at BRU.

-firmness...nowadays, i don't think you can buy [NEW] beds/mattresses that aren't up to standards, but you don't want a soft mattress...babies need a firm surface. I made sure it gave, but not too much.

-color/design...i was down to 2 mattresses and realized one had a rather "loud" design to it and if I had a white sheet on it, you would be able to see it so i went with the less decorated one.

i'd say out of all of these, the material and price were the main factors though.

eta: and you CAN try them out...when i had my first, we pulled down all the mattresses and layed on them to see how they were just as if they were adult mattresses. [we also asked someone's kid to jump on them!]

Hmmm I have to check my Baby bargains book - but that is actually the opposite of what I read.

The foam - is supposed to be lighter than the coils. The coil mattresses we saw in the store were much more than the foam - which for the firm ones baby bargains recommended were $110-140 range. There are foam and coil mattresses though in all ranges - I believe the baby bargains book recommended 150 or more coils - but I don't have the book on me to quote that number

They recommend the foam for the reason that they are easier to change the sheets. If you get foam - check for firmness - by placing your hands flat on both sides of the mattress like you are praying and push your hands together the harder it is to push the firmer the mattress.

I am not a fan of the foam ones...so we knew spring off the bat and we used the baby bargains book to get name brands and they state to get 150 coils....and that the brands are similair in quality. We are gonna get a serta or simmons likely.

You got it reversed. Foam is much lighter and less expensive. Much easier to change the sheets with foam.

I've got the Colgate Classica I, which was recommended in Baby Bargains. Its a firm foam mattress and is working out great.
