How did you find your home?
Did you use a buyer's agent? Did you look for listings and call the selling agent? Do you have to work with a buyer's agent to get info on listings before they go out to the public?

Re: How did you find your home?
Checked Newsday every Friday and went to open houses. We put in a bid at an open house and went from there.

We saw it in Harmon Homes magazine then we called the agent and set up an appointment to see it.

Did you use a buyer's agent?
Yes. We used a buyer's agent not only to find homes, but so that he could disclose information to us regarding the house that he would not have been able to had we not signed him on as a buyer broker. It actually made quite a difference, and I very much recommend signing a buyer broker for representation.
Did you look for listings and call the selling agent?
We tried it this way for many months, but found that we were always in a large bidding pool.
Do you have to work with a buyer's agent to get info on listings before they go out to the public?
I am not sure, but I do know that the last 4 houses he showed us (including the one that we are in contract with currently) were only on the market for a matter of days. He sent us his daily updates of MLS listings, and also helped us look through exclusives and for sale by owner availabilities.
We did have another agent before our buyer broker, but she was not nearly aggresive enough, and we placed 9 bids with her and were only offerd 2 chances to counter any other offers presented. Plus she was not allowed elgally to tell me if there was anything wrong with the deal, etc, b/c she was not signed as our broker, so she had to act in the interest of the seller.
Good Luck

The house that we are in the process of trying to buy my DH found for us. He knew the lady through work.

Re: How did you find your home?
True Story... Darren and I got into a terrible fight when we were doing the pre-marital wedding counseling thingy...he left me there and as he was driving away he saw this house for sale. He went home, called me at the ministers house and then came back to show it to me. Darren, myself, the minister and his wife then broke into the house to check it out (it was vacant)

Re: How did you find your home?
The ones we found "on our own" were all sold by the time we got to see them. We worked with a real estate agent who sent us the listings the first day they were available, and we got in to see most of those houses within a day or 2. In our price range the houses weren't lasting more than a few days, so this was the way to get in soon enough.

Re: How did you find your home?
we're using a builder. We looked at a lot of builders and the one we chose offered us more options and was willing to work with us a lot more then other builders. They treated us like future home owners and not just a number like other builders did. They did not lable or judge us when we walked into the model. Other builders saw a young couple and assumed we had nothing to put down or give towards the home. Our builder treated us like we were family from the moment we walked into the model till even now and we close in a few weeks. Through the whole process they have called us, sent us cards and updates. Our builder was so wonderful and really made the model feel like our own home.

I think its so funny. It's one of those great stories that you want to share...but then again you don't want to share, ya know? It makes me chuckle though.

The you will the next part of the story...the next month (march) he came out that he was gay! They had been together since they were 16 and have 4 kids together. By May (my wedding month) he had moved out with a lover...it was very interesting when they flew from FL to ny together, stayed in the hotel together. Its all a very funny story.

Re: How did you find your home?
My mom ran into an old friend from the neighborhood who was moving upstate. We got the house before it went on the market.
