How did you pay for your kitchen?

Did you save up the $$$ or finance it all, or some, or take out a home equity loan? We desperately need a kitchen and I estimate it will cost about $20-30,000 (on the high side hopefully). We need all new everything except appliances. Anyway, we estimate we can save that much MAYBE in like 3-5 years, but I don't know if I want to wait that long. Anybody that has BTDT I would appreciate any tips on how to save money, cut costs etc.

We were given money from a deceased family member. We did pay in payments for the work to be done.

We will most likely finance and do the work ourselves.

I also want to have a very simple layout without a ton of cabinetry. (Think maybe an island with storage, some open shelving and hooks from ceiling to hang pots and pans).

I know it's a personal preference but IMO, cabinets just welcome clutter. We also plan to be here for a very long time so not super concerned about resale value. Having a clean, functional kitchen with decent appliances is more important IMO.

We are in the middle of a gut reno in our home and the kitchen is really the main room we don't have $$ outright for. Family has offered the $$$ but we'd rather avoid that.

DH just built me a big pantry at the top of our basement stairs so this also saves $$$ in the kitchen.

I know places like HD also have credit plans where you pay no interest if you pay off the bill in 2 years so this is a route we will look into as well.

My mom was left money from my grandfather after he passed away and she finally got a new kitchen after 25+ years. She was thrilled. I'm sure my pop-pop was very happy for her too

We saved. We then did everything in chunks, paying cash.

We are in the process of picking a contractor. We are shocked at the price of a new kitchen. We are not doing anything crazy, and it's not going to be huge. Our quotes are ranging from 55-65k so far. We will be paying cash, I hate having CC bills.

Although we didn't gut our kitchen, we did renovate it in chunks too. When we first moved in 6 yrs ago, we did wood floors. We kept the cabinetry and didn't change the layout. The we did
Crown moulding, and chair rail. Next we replaced the countertops with granite, the sink, and then bought all new stainless appliances and repainted again, and did under cabinet lighting. Now, we are having some matching cabinets made for the corner of our kitchen with the remaining granite slab that was left over.

We used savings. We had bought new appliances when moving in and then a few years later gutted kitchen, custom cabinets, tile floor granite counters and tile backsplash

Ok good to know. I also do not want to put much on the CC, I am assuming by the responses most contractors do payment plans. In addition, it sounds like my estimation of 20-30k is on the low side, ugh. My DH cannot do anything himself, love him, but maybe he can knock down some cabinets and that's it! We also need new hardwood floors in the kitchen. If I were to do it all over again I would've bought a house with a perfect kitchen, I am kicking myself right now. Thanks for all the responses ladies! I need to jumpstart that savings account!!

Do your research.

Most of the little guys, will not be able to front the money.

They will do a contract and payments can be due at certain times, but if it's a 1 or 2 guy company, they are not going to have money just lying around to pay for all the things you want in your house.

Often you as the homeowner will also be expected to order your stuff directly from the supplier (I.e. Cabinets, doors, etc.)

This can cause delays too.

We just installed a beautiful new front door. Ordered from HD. Made by an outside company. The door is warped. HD can't do anything and the outside company is giving us the run around going on 2 months to get out here and replace.

Contractors have no control over these kinds of things.

ETA: there are also ways to cut down on cost....for example, there are beautiful floors you can install that look like hardwood but are not actually wood material. Shop for scratch and dent appliances...can save thousands this way. No one will most likely see the side of the fridge or stove once they are installed if that's where the damage is.

My DH is not handy at all.
We're 80% done with our kitchen gut job.
Seriously - approx $45k.
Alot of the money we w/d from savings. But we used our tax return check and we saved $$ over the course of a year - specially for kitchen.
This includes all- labor( bulk $$), appliances, floor, cabinets ( $19k alone).
Yes, it's a ton of money.
