How did you teach your dog not to jump?
Training my dog has been great so far but I'm having trouble keeping him from jumping on me (sometimes) and people who visit (often). What did you do that worked? Any tips would be appreciated!!!

We still have a hard time with this because Katie gets SOOOOO excited when people come over. I usually have a can with pennies in it and i shake it when she jumps. It seems to help but I don't know that she'll ever be 100% cured.

Re: How did you teach your dog not to jump?
This is our BIGGEST problem. It is horrible. Jersey gets SO overly excited when someone comes over, she jumps all over them. It is so embarassing & upsetting. Everyone says to just turn your back on them until they calm down. Not to say a word, completely ignore them, since they want attention.
Well, I have tried that, it is so frustrating for people because it takes her forever to relax. Then once she does calm down and they go to pet her, she does the same thing again! The other problem is that when they turn their back, she bites their ankles and feet. I am at a total loss. Sorry, i wish I could offer better advice

We are still working on this problem ourselves. What seems to work the best for us is tell company to ignore the dog (no petting or talking to him). Just have them come in & walk past dog. While they do this we keep making him sit & tell him to wait. Once he is calm they can pet him if they want to. It works most of the time.. Never with my mom though He JUST LOVES her!!!! Plus she doesn't listen & keeps talking to him all cute while we are trying to make him stay. LOL Please let me know if you get a better solution aside from getting a trainer.

Re: How did you teach your dog not to jump?
When DH and I get home from work he loves to jump on us. To stop that when we walk in we crouch down to his level. Now when we walk in he sits next to us and waits for us to pet him. He's gotten very good about jumping on us.
When visitors come over he gets so excited and loves to great them. We say "Simba sit" or "Simba easy"
Then he just sits next to the visitor waiting for the "ok" for him to get excited. When he gets the ok time to get excited then he pretty much will just run up and down the hallway.
This seems to work for our pup.
Always say your pets name before the command. This way they know you are talking directly to them.

Re: How did you teach your dog not to jump?
My trainer said: Keep the leash under your foot when people come over so when your dog tries to pop up the leash is under your foot and they can't. Also we use the command "OFF" and give a knee. She said that should teach her to not jump up after a while. Good luck!!!
