How do I get DH on board?

We had to put down our beautiful husky last spring. Chat Icon I am really feeling its time to get a new dog, DH is not. How do I help convince him our family is ready for a new member? And please don't suggest just binging a dog home. Yes my DH would fall in love, but I would never do that. If we are going to get a new dog, I want us all on board.

Would he be on board to just go and "look"? Or maybe convince him to stop by an adoption event? Lots of shelters have them at different stores/events in the area. Do you have a friend or family member whose dog you can watch for a few days? Then it may remind him how much he misses having a dog around?
Good luck! : )

Well, WHY doesn't he want another dog? Too much work? Money? Doesn't want to go through the loss again?

I think for him it is the emotional aspect. Her death was really devastating to us all. She was a big part of our family. We still all about her often and I still cry about it. My DH is not overly emotional and doesn't like "feeing" anything sad. He doesn't know how to handle it well.

I completely understand. My mom just got a puppy over the summer and it took some convincing for the same reasons. For her it was particularly bad because her previous dog died very young because of cancer. She didn't even know he was sick (none of us did!) until it was too late. She didn't want to do it anymore.

But I would just try and have him remember the good times. Do you have kids? Did he have a dog growing up? I did and there is NO doubt in my mind that I want that kind of love and companionship and responsibility in my future kid's life. The dog I grew up loving had to be put down when I was 16. She was just old and sick and couldn't go on anymore. I still cry (am crying right now!) when I think of her, but that doesn't negate all the wonderful days I had with her. I wouldn't trade that for anything! I would put it to him that way, but don't push too hard. He may just not be ready yet. It took my mom 3 years and a lot of convincing, but I know, I KNOW she is happy she agreed to get another dog. I see it in the way she is with him. Good luck! Chat Icon

I get that. I dread the say we say good bye. But then again nothing has a guaranteed life expectancy. Chat Icon

But maybe just going to look would be a start. I hope you find the right one. Chat Icon

Re: How do I get DH on board?

I actually asked him to go to an adoption event about two weeks ago and he was not having it. I think he knows full well that we would have left with a dog. Chat Icon
I think with the holidays coming up its making me miss my dog even more. Chat Icon I think I will just have to give DH more time. I don't want to force him into it.

From what you describe it does not sound like your DH is ready to get a new dog yet. Give him some more time.

I would honestly say don't try to talk him in to it just yet. Chat Icon
