How do I get Norton off the couch?!?!?!?!?

He definitely knows he is not supposed to be on it.
We've been putting a barstool on it when we go out, but now he's getting bold and laying on it when we're home!!!!!

3x last week in one hour, I was doing laundry and come into the living room, as soon as he saw me he got off and skulked into his crate.

What can I do?

well the fact that he is getting off in your presence completely eliminates any of my suggestions. I know they sell "scat mats" that you can put across your couch but I think it sends a small electrical shock & I am never 100% comfortable with these types of devices.

get one of those rubber matts that you'd put in the car, the ones that are smooth on one side, but have bumps on the other-put them on the couch smooth side down, he probably won't like the way the bumps feel, so he won't lay on them, but they won't hurt him...
or if you can, put the cushions up when you're not on the couch.

Supposedly it is a shock like "static cling" but like you I am not into frying the dog & I am never sure how much to trust that type of deterrent. I have not used it personally though so this is strictly opinion & not based on actual use.

What about using a spray bottle? Spray him on the nose everytime you catch him on the couch, even when he gets off on his own. My dog is well aware that she's not supposed to be on the couch but if we're not home she will go on it. It's a little hard for her to hide the big mess of hair she leaves behind. So we keep her in the bedroom when we're not home. We have a high bed that she can't get on so she just lays on her dog bed.

I actually used a scat mat around my Christmas tree the first year I had my cat - he'd climb the damn thing and I'd have to get a ladder out to climb up and pluck him out. I felt a little guilty, but it really is nothing - kind of like touching a doorknob after walking around on a rug wearing socks. It worked for a while, so you might want to try it, BUT - the cat got used to it and realized after the initial shock, nothing would happen. I'd come home and find him napping on the scat mat. I guess the moral of my story is they don't really hurt the animals, and it might give your dog the idea to stay off the couch.
