How do I search for a breeder on the AKC website
In the breeder section, it is all about if you are a breeder. I don't see a way yo search for a breeder. Am I blind?

Re: How do I search for a breeder on the AKC website
I tried that also, and had no luck. I just did a search of the breed I wanted on the web. I then emailed a few, had some phone conversations, back and forth correspondence etc...and after a couple of months we had our Bullmastiff! Just make sure the breeder only breeds that specific dog, and should welcome you to his or her home, even if they live OOS. Responsible breeders will also give you pedigree history,etc...look to see if the dogs are kept indoors or in a large kennel, as opposed to small cages and they should only produce a couple of litters a year. Basically, what I am saying is make sure it isn't a puppy mill. Good luckl! What breed are you looking for?

Re: How do I search for a breeder on the AKC website
I did find the AKC website breeder search confusing also, and then when I finally did figure out where the contact info was for breeders, I was a little discouraged.
I know I will probably get flamed for this, and I want to make it clear from the beginning that I do not intend to obtain a dog from any BYB, puppy mill, or pet store, nor do I agree with anyone else doing so.
That being said, when I was on that site looking for Brussels Griffon breeders, I put in my zip code, and they listed something like 20 breeders for the whole country, and the closest from Manhattan being upstate, some 70 miles away.
I find it really hard to believe that there are NO legitimate breeders closer than that.
On LIF we are educated about BYB and the like, so we would keep looking for alternatives if we couldn't make it 70 miles to one breeder, but if you think about the average Joe/Jane, do you think they are going to travel 70 miles to the closest breeder when they can do a google search and find a "breeder" 10 miles away in Brooklyn? To them, what is the difference? The dogs are just a cute, the price isn't much different, and they don't have to go that far.
I wish that there was another way to get a listing of reputable breeders other than the AKC site, or if the AKC site offered legitimate breeders a free listing so that people won't have to resort to buying from these BYB.

Our breeder is in Ohio. I found her on the web, she is not a PM or BYB. My puppy was shipped to us. She only has about 6 dogs and she keeps thm in her house. She invited me and DH to pick up the dog and even offered us room and board, but we had the dog shipped. I also spoke with other people she sold pups to and after a couple of moths, we were satosfied and bought our pup, which came with AKC papers, pedigree, and other extras.

The thing is, I think its really hard to tell from an internet site if someone is legit or not. Search any popular toy breed in NYC and 50 sites pop ip for people who claim to be breeders who will sell you a dog. It makes it very confusing. Someone could make a nice website and really just be a BYB, that is what I am afraid of if I need to get my dog from out of state. Your breeder invited you to her home to show you, which IMO is a sign that she is legit. She also provided references which is a plus. Then again I read somewhere that a reputable breeder never ships a dog they make you pick up the dog I don't believe that personally, I am just going by "rules" that are posted on the internet which are designed to help people avoid buying from BYB posing as real breeders. I am just trying to do the right thing you know?

Re: How do I search for a breeder on the AKC website
I would suggest after finding a breeder you feel comfortable with, contact the AKC to find out their status.
They will be able to tell you if the breeder you're dealing with is in fact a actual AKC registered breeder.
When we were considering to buy an English Bulldog, I looked on the internet. I found a bunch that were either BYBs or brokers. Be VERY careful of brokers. They have websites, come off as VERY reputable but in the end they're no better than the PMs they get their dogs from.
It's not easy to find a good/reputable breeder. But the search is worth the effort.
What breed are you looking to get? Maybe someone on here can recommend a breeder.

I really want a Brussels Griffon. I wouldn't be adopting right now, but most likely in the next few months. I work nights now, but I want to wait until my transfer to days is complete, because it will be much easier that way to have a dog walker come when I am not home, or put the dog in doggy daycare when I am at work. The transfer could take months to happen, I just never know. I am willing to wait as long as it takes to do this the right way and make sure all arrangements are made before I bring any dog home.

DH and I felt that since this woman was openly inviting us to her home, she really had nothing to hide. I spoke to people from all over the country who got dogs from her, I spoke to people from her home state but I figured they might be friends of hers so the out of state references helped. She sent photos, of course, but sure that doesn't prove much. So we felt comfort again, in knowing she was willing to have us at her home and she liked that fact that I had so much interest and had so many questions. We had to fill out an extensive application and show her photos of our home. We had to assure her we had a fence and would get obedience trainng since our breed is a Bullmastiff. Not that they check up on you anyhow, but nonetheless... She has turned down many people who have applied for pups. There is no harm to the pup if they are being shipped. They will not ship if the temperature is below freezing or something and they make you wait until the pup is old enough. I never read where someone won't ship a pup. She gave us her vet records, and sent a lovelycare package. Again, you just have to feel comfy and ask questions. If they are BYB and they see you are hip to that stuff, they will not welcome you to their home. This womankept her dogs in her house, she had an entire finished basement, carpeted and warm for her dogs. NO cages, only one breed, etc...take your time until you feel it is right.
