How do I teach my newborn the difference from day and night

He sleeps all day long. I have to wake him to feed him and it is a struggle because he keeps falling asleep on me. I change him, take his clothes off, wipe his face with cool water and nothing phases him. At 12 AM he is the happiest most alert little boy. This goes on until 4 or 5 AM. Re: How do I teach my newborn the difference from day and night

I think I read recently that newborns do eventually set their own clock, but with both of my boys I used my dimmer lights only at night for feedings and changings on the lowest setting possible. All day and early evening (now that its dark so early) I would have as much light as possible on, even when they were napping. Once I could bathe them I also gave them baths before bed, it seemed to "knock" them out.

It basically happens on its own little by little..But I'll let you know what I have always done.

I make a big deal out of BREAKFAST..lots of kisses and goodmornings. TV on etc...

Daytime feedings are always time for talking, lights on, tv on..happy events...

Last feeding of the evening is the same but brought down a notch. Maybe bath time...PJs on..bottom coated up good..etc

Middle of the night feedings..no lights other than "night lights". TV is barely audible or off completely. Diaper is changed with no fan fair. Baby is fed, diapered, and put back down...

Usually little by little they get it. I would imagine that they would of gotten on their own regardless of what I do. But my kids have all been pretty much daytime babies by the time they are a month or so.

thanks for the advice. Hoping tonight is better since I did everything today except hire a marching band to keep him awake today. Chat Icon
