How do I tell my upstairs neighbor....

to get area rugs and not wear his shoes in his apt. He is so freaking loud it's been bothering me for weeks. I know we are supposed to have a certain percentage of floor covered...and I know he doesn't. How do I approach this? I don't know him....
Thanks Chat Icon Im just so frustrated.

Maybe leave an anonymous note saying that you can hear him - don't mention you are the apt. directly below - and that he should cover more of his floor area.

If you want to do it directly, I would say "Do you think you could get an area rug for your <insert area>? When you walk through that area it sounds extremely loud from downstairs." You could also show him how loud it sounds if you want to drive the point home.

If you ask him & he refuses, complain to the Super or Board (if applicable). He'll know it was you but at least action will be taken.

Otherwise you can tell the person/board in charge of the apartments from the get-go. He'll still be able to figure it out but it will save you the face to face.

I know when I lived in Queens, it had been a requirement by the co-op board (perhaps even the city) that 80% of all walking space be covered. Perhaps your apartment building has similar rules someplace in its bylaws. I would ask your super or landlord (if you rent). because this way you may have actual legal recourse.

I'm sure your co-op has the 80% rule (although some owners/tenants) assume that doesn't include hallways.

If it were me (and it was me about 5 years ago)... I'd attach a note to his door - or leave it with the doorman and cc your managing agent.

I hope you get a positive response..
