How do you become a substitute teacher in LI?
Being as things are looking a little grim I wanna know how do you apply to be a substitute in Nassau county? I know nothing really of LI districts other than what i read on here. I wouldnt want to be far from where I live so I wouldnt mind applying to districts like New Hyde Park, Floral Park, Elmont, Franklin Square, Hempstead and Valley stream.
Cold you ladies maybe point me in the right direction?

You can look on the individual district websites..there will usually be some kind of instructions if they are looking for subs.

Re: How do you become a substitute teacher in LI?
I saw in Sunday's Newsday that Manhasset was having a substitute teacher hiring fair:
Open House Wednesday, August 20th from 9 AM – 12 Noon at the HS Board Room (3rd Floor), 200 Memorial Place, Manhasset
Also, Rockville Centre is hiring permanent/per diem subs:
Email resume to: [email protected]; Rockville Centre Schools, 128 Shepherd St., Rockville Centre, NY 11570

Re: How do you become a substitute teacher in LI?
ETA: This applies to the middle/high schools for some of the areas you mentioned. The elementary schools follow different procedures as they are part of different districts.
New Hyde Park, Floral Park, Elmont, Franklin Square are all part of the Sewanhaka School District and to be honest hire very few subs as they have mandatory in-house subbing. In my building, I think I saw one or two outside subs for the whole school year.
Even with this, I would still try to contact the district office. Here is a link for personnel

i've never subbed, but i've heard for many districts, you just call and ask to be added to the list and they send you the paperwork.

Re: How do you become a substitute teacher in LI?
Valley Stream has three elementary districts; 13, 24 and 20. You would have to contact the district offices for each in order to get placed on the sub list. They use many subs on a daily basis, and in general if you are called to sub, that call comes in early in the morning (like 6 a.m.)
When I was working on my masters I completed a leave replacement in district 13. When that ended I was placed on the sub list and they then asked me to be a permanent sub. I was at the right place at the right time. I suggest you give them a call!
