How do you begin to decorate an entire house?
I'm so sick of all the colors in our apt. We're in contract now for a house and there are so many rooms but I can't decide on what color scheme for each room. I know what I like, and we're not buying too much right away, we'll just be using what we have for the most part. Our furniture is neutral anyway so even when we get new one day we'll keep that the same.
So what is your inspiration for each room? A painting? your existing furniture? any other accent pieces? I need a starting point here!
If anyone wants to post pictures I love bright, open, airy and light. I'm done with earthtones. I love pale yellow, light gray, blues, purple accents, greens...

if you already have furntirue i would go based on that... ie a rug that you plan on putting in the room, or the color of the bedding

I agree withe the PP. Do you have throw pillows or curtains you really like? Pull colors from those too. I watch a lot of hgtv too for inspiration.

Re: How do you begin to decorate an entire house?
haha i'm in the process of doing this right now
pinterest and different blogs were a HUGE help
so were hgtv and houzz
basically i went with color schemes i liked, and am now moving one room at a time, leaving the others unfinished
all of the paint colors i picked out for the house coordinate in tone
we did the bedroom, and are now working on the living room..but only once the bedroom was 100 percent done
also, i made a list based on my inspiration for each room and stuck to it-even if it meant searching 2 weeks for the perfect frame
it's fun, but def. a lot of work

Go online and look for inspiration or looks and colors that you just tend to gravitate towards. This was a great website I came across.
If you find a neutral color you like then use the other colors as accent colors for flowers, pillows, decor etc.
I agree.. Pinterest has been SUCH a tool organizing everything I liked.

Thanks everyone!
This is what's overwhelming me. I need all the little things, window treatments, throw pillows, accent furniture, picture frames and other decorative things. I'm pretty much only keeping the couches and our bedroom furniture. I don't know where to start.

I would take it one room at a time, one step at a time, and not stress about the accessories and other minor details that are less permanent. I switch out things like throw pillows all the time. I would build the room around major pieces (furniture you already have, rugs you want to use), and go from there. I've been in my house since Jan. 2009 and there are still finishing touches (e.g. artwork) that I'd like to add to some rooms. I think home design/decor is a work in progress!
When I moved into my house, there were certain rooms that I had no idea what I'd do with. For example -- the formal living room. So I started with choosing a wall color (pale green), then found an area rug that "went" with the wall color, then chose furniture and upholstery colors, then accessories, such as table lamps.
I also can sometimes get overwhelmed looking online. But I love looking in magazines like House Beautiful, Better Homes & Gardens, etc., for design inspiration (such as color schemes, furniture placement, lighting). It's more tangible and easier to organize your ideas I think, given that you have actual pages.
I used a lot of the paint colors in shades you said you were interested in. If you want some inspiration, here are some of my room colors (can't remember kitchen, son's room, etc., but I remember most!):
Formal Living Room & Formal Dining Room: BM Par Four (pale green)
Entryway and upstairs hallway: BM Shaker Beige
Den: BM Weston Flax (pale yellow)
Master Bedroom: SW Quietude (soft bluish-greenish-grey tone)
Office/Third Bedroom: BM Nantucket Grey (khaki greenish/grey)
Hall Bath: BM Saybrook Sage
Half Bath: SW Ponder (smoky lavender/grey)
My kitchen is a bluish green (we have white cabinets), master bath is a latte color, son's room is light blue with a tan accent wall.
Hope this helps!

Best to just look at it one room at a time!
