How do you deal with losing your cool when your buttons are pushed??

I guess maybe this is more a question for the SAHM's who spend all day with their kids. Jack is so whiney and cranky that I just can't bear it anymore! We were at the zoo today and he wanted to ride the train, then we got on the train and he threw a fit screaming "no train!" Then another tantrum when the ride was over becasue he wanted to go again. I'm trying to hold Molly, he's kicking and screaming and I want to just leave him with the monkeys! But seriously, I feel like I lose my cool more than not these days and I don't want to be a mean mommy, but I'm at the end of my rope. Anyone have inspiration or things they do to make it less stressful?

You must have been reading my mind bc I was going to post the same thing. Nate has been so whiny and clingy since the baby came home. I know it's a huge adjustment for him and I'm trying to be patient. But sometimes it's sooooo annoying. I usually have to walk away from him, so I don't loose my cool. It took all of me the other day not to tell him to shut up. Luckily, I haven't had to deal with tantrums in public yet (so not looking forward to them).

Hopefully someone else can give us some tips. Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

I odn't have any children yet, but my sister was a screamer and a tantrum thrower... my mom's advice to others... ignore it. It must be hard to do when you're in a public place, but my mom always just ignored it.

Good luck!

I usually ignore Michael's tantrums (he rarely throws one (knock wood)), but if it gets to the point where I'm ready to snap, I usually put him in his play room and kick a wall or punch a cabinet, seems to help!

I've put myself in time out.

Seriously.

I told Joseph that "Mommy needs to go in the thinking chair to think of ways to calm down." I sat there for a full 5 minutes (keep in mind this is in the am when I drop him off at 8:04 & catch an 8:11am train). There was no time for a time out but I did it anyway.

Thats actually smart. Let them realize that mommy needs to cool down. I may try it and also add a shot of tequila to the time out chair. Chat Icon

I have to admit that i have sort of" lost it" a few times and yelled at him and it scared him but he did stop tantruming BUT most of the time I try to ignore the tantrums if possible. This age is very tough on the nerves!!!

When DS turned one 2 weeks ago he also decided to was time to throw tanturms at home. I ignore them and let him roll around on the floor and bang. If he is just really cranky and I am at a loss I find myself hugging him and kissing him and telling him I love him to pieces and it actually calms me down.
This past friday he threw a tanturm around his bed time ( 1/2 hr earlier) so I decided to feed him and put him to sleep. Then I went and took a shower and just cried.
