How do you discipline throwing food?
I'm at my wits end! Jack is constantly flinging everything off of his tray. He is like Jekyl and Hyde...one minute eating nicely the next he picks up the bowl and flings it across the room for no apparent reason but laughs. I forecefully say "no" and take the bowl away and tell him lunch time or whatever is over. Doesn't seem to matter. Any suggestions? I seriously need to repaint my kitchen wall from all the yogurt and pasta stains all over it.

Re: How do you discipline throwing food?
Claire is 13 months old and does this at every meal. Ive tried saying no, giving her small amounts, using a suction bowl, ending meal time, and really nothing has worked. I have noticed that she usually starts to do this when she doesnt want anymore. So I *try* to look for the signs and take most of the food away before we have a huge mess and distract her with something

Re: How do you discipline throwing food?
James usually starts throwing its and indication that he either is full...or doesn't like that particular food.
I usually just take iwhatever is left off of his tray ...and if he still is hungry he will reach for the food...so I will give him back some of the food...if he throws it again...I take it off the tray again....its a repeat cycle.

My nephew does this and i think its a combination of being done or full and wanting a reaction. He is old enough to know "time out" all you have to do is say it to him and he turns into a perfect little angel

Re: How do you discipline throwing food?
As soon as I see my daughter flinging food, I take her plate away. Or you can give just a couple pieces at a time so that they don't fling the whole thing. Its just a phase they go through. I don't make a big deal about it and figure eventually she will grow tired of that one day.

I agree - this worked like a charm for me.

I keep it small portions (less to clean Up) and take away if he looks like he's playing with it, which leads to him plopping it on the floor. He doesn't really throw, just toss overboard!

Re: How do you discipline throwing food?
My son never really did this but my daughter does. I learned its her way of telling us shes done. It is especially annoying b/c we have carpeting under our DR table (hopefully not for much longer). I would just say a stern "No" - one time my DH said it really stern and slapped his hand on the table and her bottom lip was way way out and her eyes were cast downward for a good 5 minutes - it breaks my heart just remembering the face. But she has gotten better...shes now saying "Done Ma"and hands it to me with her drink and fork (so cute!) - most of the time not always, we had 2 plate flingings last week.

Re: How do you discipline throwing food?
So I've realized that some of his throwing is to feed the dog. Its nice that he shares . So now, dog will go outside when Jack eats and I will see if that makes any difference. Thanks

I was going to say, I have 3 dogs and it just is natural for them to experiment (esp with a dogs happy reaction.)
I can't remember when, but eventually it stopped and she now yells and tells them NO! It was around 18 months. I would, before, just take away her food when she did that.

Re: How do you discipline throwing food?
MArissa is 17 months and she will do this when she is full or doesn't want to anymore. Idon't give her much on her plate also when I give her yogurt I will put a little of it in a bowl and let her eat that and then put a little more in the bowl so she doesn't fling it all over the place and its been working. She used to take everythign and fling it on the floor also try and get a splat mat I have one that I put under her chair so if she does throw things on the floor I just have to wipe off the mat rather then my carpet.
