How do you do the math to go part time?
I'm thinking of asking to go part time. If I did, I would no longer be eligable for benefits. My company pays them in full, so how do I calculate what my hourly salary would be to include benefits? Is there a formula? or is it just another 10K on top of my salary?

How many days a week? With my company, if I were to go PT, I believe I would get a percentage of my salary based on days a week . For example - 60% of my salary if I worked 3 days a week.

Re: How do you do the math to go part time?
Thanks for responding, but I guess I wasn't clear in the question.
If I go part time, I will probably lose my company paid health benefits and we will end up paying for DHs via his job. However, my company pays them in full - for myself, DH and Megan. So I consider that part of my salary - it was part of the package that was offered to me when I agreed to work there.
When I'm negotiating my rate for part time work, I want to be sure to include that extra value of the benefits into the daily or hourly salary. So lets say that I normally would make 100 day - how much extra do I add on to cover the benefits that I won't be getting any longer?

Will they tell you what they pay for your benefits? They may tell you that your health insurance costs them $8K/yr and you can go from there - either factor that in or ask for less salary but request to keep benefits. My company pay for your benefits as long as you work 20hr/wk.

I have never heard of a company doing this to be honest. Not saying they don't, but I think you sort of lose the perk when you opt to work p/t. I know when I've went from f/t to p/t with two different companies, I was just paid my salary divided out to be hourly times what hours I work. I wasn't given extra to cover what my benefits were when working f/t.

good luck most companies don't consider it = to $. its a benifit they offer, and its usually a take it or leave it kind of thing. Some companies offer a buy ack plan, where if you are entiled to benefits and you opt out of them they will give you a percentage of the $, but if you are going part time, you are not entilted to them.
I believe it is a NY state law they they do not have to offer benefits to any employee under 35 hours

Re: How do you do the math to go part time?
Thanks for replying - I was afraid of this...
Several years ago, I left a job for this job - well - it took my former company a while to find a suitable replacement and I worked freelance for them for a while. When I negotiated my freelance rate, someone had told me to make sure I calculated the value of the benefits and all into my rate - and it was accepted -(frankly-I just pulled a # out of the air) so I just figured it would work that way in this situation as well.
I don't think my company will still cover my health benefits if I go part time - and if I don't think DH will let me take that much of a pay cut without the extra $ to cover benefits...
