How do you feel about your school district?

For those who know you will not be having children in the future; how do you feel about your town's school district?

A while back, I wondered how people would take it if I wanted to be involved with the schools and contribute. Obviously, I wouldn't be joining the PTA... But paying taxes for the district grants me a right to have an opinion on how the money is spent, doesn't it? Maybe I could contribute something valuable to the SD.

Sadly, I don't think it would be received well if I did try to get involved.

Do you ever wish that they had some kind of tax rebate for non-parents since we're paying taxes into a school we'll never use? My house value benefits from a good SD but that's the only benefit I think I'll ever see, unless I'm forgetting something.

Re: How do you feel about your school district?

We bought our house in a school district that has a good reputation. We might not have children now, but knew we would someday.

Even if we don't/can't... I don't agree that non-parents should get a tax rebate. Schools need proper funding in order to function. It is in our interest as a society provide the best education possible for our youth. We will not be able to compete globally otherwise. JMO.

There are lots of ways to get involved in schools. Volunteer in a local school, mentor a teenager, tutor a struggling student, come in on Career Day and talk about your field... GL!!

Eh. It's OK. I live in Manhattan, Sutton Place/Midtown East. The elementary school is good and the high school is for the artistically gifted. There is also a very good Catholic HS down the block. We don't plan to move out of the city but may have to move to to another neighborhood to a 2 bedroom eventually.

ETA: I agree with the above poster about mentoring, ect.Chat Icon

I live in Queens but I always thought the star rebate was for those who do not currently have children in schools on LI, is that not so? Chat Icon

I think district is important for resale purposes...my part of queens is more expensive for it's commute to NYC but also bc we have the best district in queens, arguably in NYC.

Also there are many ways to get involved in schools. Mentor, tutoring, volunteer Chat Icon

You'll end up with well-educated neighbors! Chat Icon

My school district is awful. I feel bad for the kids, but actually kind of like it, b/c this area is so expensive other wise. There isn't much middle ground here, it is either crazy expensive vs crappy schools. Its nice to have a reasonably priced area for people like me that don't need the school district, but there are a few people with kids in my neighborhood that go to the public school--mostly the elementary.

I don't know about getting involved--always feel that non parents aren't really welcomed in the things for & about kids, but there may be ways that might work.
