How do you find out how a school district rates?
Forgive me for sounding dumb, , but some of these websites confuse me...they compare one school to another in such detail...i just want to know which are the best grade/high schools, and how my school district rates? TIA!!!

I think on MLSLI there is a link with each school district and you can see their "report card".

I used that as well in addition to visiting each schools websites and sometimes googling.

GREATSCHOOLS.NET
Seriously, I only use this. I don't like the one that MLSLI uses. It doesn't give me the information that I want.
Greatschools.net is very good. It has all the test scores, gives you the NYS average for the test, gives you a break down of the community dynamics, gives you statistics on the teachers, and depending on the school if parents have written "reviews" you can read them too.

Re: How do you find out how a school district rates?
i would go to the school as well. try to talk to some of the parents (go to a football game)
while the websites give test scores, etc., it doesnt give info on extracurriculars, etc.

Re: How do you find out how a school district rates?
this is the NYS report card
http://www.emsc.nysed.gov/repcrd2005/home.shtml
It takes some time, but go into the SD you are looking at and look at the classroom size for elementary school (you probably want to see 22 or under)
for middle schools you can look at the state testing and how the students did
for high school - look for graduation rate, how many go onto a 4 year college, suspensions/etc, and Regents exams percentages (you want the basic/required ones to be 90+% passing)
comparing the district to other districts is a good idea too. If you know the best ones in LI, such as Southside (is that RVC?), Jericho, Syosset, Half Hallow Hills - then you can work backwards and see what districts are closely rated with them.
