Re: how do you get started on planting aa veggie garden

I am not an expert by any means but my mom definately has a green thumb and I am following her lead. We will be making beds for our garden above ground. My mom has had great results doing it this way. I started the seeds already the begining of April. I think you can still start them. I used starter soil (I think that's what it's called) which I soaked overnight in water. Put it in a 4 pack and put your seeds in. Put the whole thing in a big ziploc bag and close. When they are about 2 inches high, you can open the bag a little then a week or so later you can take them out of the bag. When they have 4 leaves on them you can replant them in a bigger pot. Then when they get a bit bigger you can put them outside. Compost in the soil also helps to get a great crop but I honestly don't remember when you're supposed to add it. I think my mom puts it in the dirt at the end of the seasn so the soil will be prepared for the following year's crop. I hope that helps a little.

you also have to rototiller and make the area of grass into soil. We alsways get dirt with manure in it. (I know it sounds gross) but we always have the best garden with it

this is how we do it, we have a tiller, we tiller the ground, then get the black weed cover, make splits in it wherever the plant is going to go, we dont put any mulch on the black weed cover. we give them miracle grow and wallah. I even get corn and when I did pumpkins we got a 95lb. pumpkin.

edit to say you have to dig and clear all the grass, do not tiller the grass into the area.

make sure you get all roots out - otherwise you will be pulling weeds all summer.

on the veggie note - start with seedlings - not seed - SO MUCH EASIER!

Definitely start with seedlings. How big do you want your garden? if you're willing to start small, just get a few plants that interest you and are also easy, like tomatoes.

What about starting with an herb garden? Basil, thyme, rosemary and parsely are all very easily grown in boxes so there's less work with tilling or prepping the soil.

Have fun! I love watching all the stuff grow! Chat Icon
