How do you help a shy child

I went to school for the Halloween parade today. Teachers both told me DD was a joy to have in class, good student, good listener, but painfully shy.

I know she is a sociable little girl, but she was also with her past classmates in daycare/nursery school /pre-k for 3 years. How can I help her feel more at ease?

Can you try to maybe get her together with a classmate one on one on the weekend?

Did the teachers have any advise? Does she speak to the teachers? I know Mattingly would not talk ot the teacher and then when we talked to him about it telling him he had to talk to her, had to answer her questions etc, he opened up almost immediately.

I do think we give our kids so many mixed messages. Don't talk to strangers, and then bam they are in K and everyone is a stranger. And we expect them to talk to everyone.

Also - I just want to say I am bummed that different schools in the same district have different policies regarding Halloween. I wish I could have gone to school for the parade, but they don't allow it.

Have playdates at your house.

Move her to Amanda's class

I would try the play date thing. I joined the PTA and became class parent so we could meet other kids in the class. We also have a class list, ask J who she likes and call and make a play date. You know once she is comfortable wiith her classmates, she will do great.
