How do you know if you'll go early? Added ? for BTDT moms!
Some women say that they're due in X weeks but they know that they're going to go early or have a feeling that it will be before then?
I would like to go early (not too early) but isn't it up to to determine that?
For BTDT moms who went early - did you have any symptoms/problems/signs that you were going to go early or did it just happen?
I'm nervous that I'm not going to make it to my showers at 35 and 36 weeks!!

Well honestly you never really know. You might have a feeling or indications but they can be wrong. They told me I would go any day for weeks with DD and I finally went into labor at 38 weeks only to end up with a section.
This time this little is measuring just about the same as DD and I'm scheduled for a repeat section at 38 w 6 days which is later than when I went with DD - and she is dropping so my OB has said there is a chance I could go sooner than my scheduled section. Whether it happens or not - who knows! But I am at 21 days so I know that is the longest I will have to wait if she doesn't make her appearance sooner.

I was very swollen and achy. BUt I had twins so I knew I was going early-it happened a couple of weeks earlier then we expected because of preeclampsia

Honestly, 9 out of 10 preggos think they're going early. I think maybe 2 of those 9 are right.
Typical example: My girlfriend was due September 25.. her mother (a nurse) SWORE she was having an August baby based on her size. She gave birth October 2 by c-section because she was making no progress.
I think at the end, people just want it to be over and they hope that every ache and pain is an indication of labor but it's really more of a wish than a sense IMO.
I thought I was going early and I did - 4 days early. But I was already dilating at my first internal, made progress by my second AND I had my ob strip my membranes ( ) which sometimes moves things along.

Interesting...do you have to be at a certain point before your doctor will strip your membranes?

With this pregnancy I had a gut feeling I was going to go early. So much so that when talking to my OB about scheduling my-cesction I told him I was not going to make it to 39 weeks. Sure enough, a few weeks later I had a pre-term labor scare and my cervix is already soft and short. I am just hoping to make it to 34 weeks.
For me, I am really in tune with my body and I "just knew".

The only reason I knew I was going to go early was b/c I was admitted to L&D at almost 36 weeks for high BP and severe swelling. The doctor on call told me that I was moving towards pre-eclampsia and there was no way the doctors would let me go past 38 weeks. I never thought I was going to go early and was unprepared for being taken out of work 1 month before my EDD and put on strict bedrest.

I was convinced I was going to go early a few weeks ago (I am 38 weeks tomorrow), but then after talking to a lot of people, I found out there really is no way of knowing for sure. Some people walk around dialated for weeks and don't go for a while.

I was hoping to go early - given that everyone kept reminding me that first time moms tend to go late. I delivered my son at 37 weeks and I can honestly say I had absolutely NO idea. No indictaions or anything. I didn't lose my mucus plug beforehand, no pain, nothing. Just woke up with intense contractions at 1:30 am, water broke a few minutes later, went to hospital, and my was in my arms 5 hours later.

Re: How do you know if you'll go early? Added ? for BTDT moms!
I would think the only people that know definitely is if there is a medical issue (incompetent cervix, heart issue) or multiples.
I do agree that most people think they're going early & often that's not the case (in fact I once read that most people go late with their first). Part of the reason I think people believe they'll be early is once you're in the last month, in your mind, you're done with being pregnant. You're cranky, you're bigger than ever before & you are over it.
With my first I went at 34 weeks (a little too early). It never occurred to me that I'd go early, which is why I showed up at the hospital in denial that I was in labor. In retrospect, the biggest sign to me was I had so much pressure, I felt like the baby was just going to drop out. After my water broke & followed a few hours later with contractions, I knew I wasn't going to have that October baby after all.

I think you do need to be at a certain point but I can't say for sure. I was 39 weeks, although my OB offered to do it the appointment before which I think was 37 weeks. Again, I think that was based on the progress I was making.
And let me just state that stripping the membranes doesn't always move things along but it is unpleasant (to put it nicely). I don't want all you preggos running out to suffer through this when the results aren't guaranteed.

This is SOOO true! You can never tell. My only hint that I was going to go into labor soon was that I was losing my mucous plug, and my DD stopped moving for a day (doc said she was resting up for the big day). I was one day late...but I was convinced the whole pregnancy I would go early
ETA - stripping membranes is NOT fun! I wouldn't opt for it ladies, it hurts! My doc did it without me knowing or asking. I went into labor about 3-4 days later, and I really think it had absolutely nothing to do with stripping my membranes.
