How do you know when teething begins?

DD has been drooling for a few weeks now- much more than ever before. The last few days she has been really fussy, and she is usually such a good baby. Yesterday my mom and I felt her gums and on her upper gum it feels like a grain of sand.

She is only 3 months old and 1 week old. I thought this was really young, but I have no idea what else is making her so fussy for the last three days??!!

Could this be teething?

ETA: Also she has been putting her fist in her mouth and even will **** on her finger. She hasn't had any trouble sucking though- she wants the pacifier more than ever

Emily first showed signs of teething at 2.5 months -- around Christmas time. Granted it got MUCH worse but that's when the bad drool started along with her putting her hands and everything else in her mouth constantly.

So it definately can be it! I hope she's a fast teether!!

Re: How do you know when teething begins?

Alex started teething around the same time, and her first two teeth broke out at exactly 4 months, so it's entirely possible. Signs of teething are drooling, constantly biting/gumming, putting fists in the mouth, lack of interest in the bottle (because it hurts to s*ck), etc. If she's having trouble sleeping try giving her some infant tylenol or motrin... we also used frozen bananas, and frozen washcloths.

My son has been doing that since he was 2 1/2 months. He will be four months tomorrow. Still no sign of a tooth though. He drools like crazy and constantly tries to shove his fists in his mouth - to the point where he chokes himself and then keeps right on doing it.

What's the youngest your babies started? Ellie is only 2 mos, but just this past week she's started doing all the things you're describing. Suddenly fools around with bottle rather than sucking, sticking her fist in her mouth constantly to the point of gagging herself and loads of extra drool, etc.
