how do you know when to change car seats?

i have the snugride 32 the baby is about 17-18 lbs it doesnt change to front facing when do i change car seats this one is becoming a PITA

You can change at anytime. As long as you use a rear facing car seat. I have a convertible seat that I am going to start to use in 2 weeks. You need to keep your child rear facing til at least a year old and 20 pounds. If not longer...

The manual should tell you what the limits are for height and weight.

We switched out of the infant seat before we reached the limits because DD was getting so cramped in there.

No she is in a Britax and it says she can be in it up to a certain weight or when her ears get to the top of the seat. She's far from the weight limit and an inch or so away from the height limit so we'll be switching to the Graco Nautilus soon.
