How do you start???
For all of you ladies that had started the adoption process - how did you start? My DH and I are considering adoption if our next IVF cycle in unsuccessful. I've been searching the internet and my head is now spinning!!!
Can anyone advise on where to start, and good agencies etc.?

Re: How do you start???
I have been starting / stopping for about a year and my head still spins. I usually do a 'search' and read as much as I can, and I also have found adoption forums, and blogs, and have talked with people as well. I have emailed quite a few agencies for information and have received emails and mail from many. I find the agencies that are very agressive I tend to shy away from. The people who are flighty and don't return calls I drop, and right now I have been working with Commonwealth (CAI)...and now researching New Beginnings, which are located in Mineola.

I agree with everything posted above. Just research research research. The internet is a great thing!! Send away for as much information as you can from the agencies. The Yahoo groups have a multitude of groups that are for all different kinds of international adoptions and they are a wealth of information. There are also a ton of books on adoption that are helpful to read. I read so many I can't even remember some of the titles.

Re: How do you start???
Research and some soul searching is the way we started. There are so many decisions to make to just to get started. Our first decision was domestic vs. international. The next big decision was which agency. I cant stress how important a good agency is. Do your research, narrow your choices down and then talk to people who have recently adopted successfully with the agencies your are considering, then toalk to people who have thier child(ren) home for a few years. You need support upfront but you may also need support down the line. A good agency will be there for both.
