How does Christmas today in your family compare to when you were younger??

I am sitting here all depressed, totally missing my childhood. At Christmas, we used to have my grandparents over, all my aunts, uncles and cousins...huge Italian Christmas. My grandparents would sleep over for the whole week after, up until New Years, when everyone else in the family would come back for another celebration. I'd get to hang out with my whole family. Now, the day after Christmas, I am sitting here totally lost. My aunts and uncles have all moved out of state, my father has moved out of state and my grandparents, brother and many cousins have passed and it stinks. I soooo miss Christmas how it used to be and makes me even sadder to realize no matter what I will never ever have that again!! I just wish I could travel back to my childhood for an hour, just to be around all that again and be able to appreciate more than when I was so young and hadn't a clue that none of that woud exist one day!!

Sorry to be a downer, I think when I am bored and this has been all I can think about all morning!! I miss my family!!

Re: How does Christmas today in your family compare to when you were younger??

Christmas in my family used to be a big dinner on Christmas Eve with more fish than I could ever handle. Then I would go to sleep and wake up on Christmas morning and Santa had come.

When I was really young, my brother would drag me out of bed but as I got older the roles changed and I got HIM out of bed and we would go open our stockings. Then we would wake up Mom and Dad and drag them under tree. I was usually the first one sitting under the tree shaking presentsChat Icon

Then we played with our toys, eventually got dressed and had dinner with family a little later in the afternoon.

The day after was usually a trip to the mall to exchange things or spend Xmas money.

This year a lot is different for DH and me. In May my IL's moved back to Poland and in July my Bro and SIL moved to NC. For both of us, our holidays felt a little empty without these special people around us.

Pretty much the same... Except I don't have to wait until 11 for my step-brother to come over to open my gifts.

That is NOT easy for for a 6 year old!

It used to be a zoo with so many people. Now its much smaller and a lot more casual. When I was younger everyone got dressed up, now all the kids wear jeans.

DH was just saying how things aren't the same anymore. This year, everyone threw gifts at each other, opened them and went him.

He's actually really upset about it. Chat Icon

I'd much rather be a kid again. But now I can relive all the Christmas fun with my own child.

Christmas was much more fun when there were kids in my immediate family (right now there are none). It's easy for me to become nostalgic and miss the way things used to be years ago.

But, there were many more arguments when I was young--between my parents, grandparents and parents, etc. Someone always seemed to be upset with someone else. These days, most have mellowed out, so the arguments either don't happen, or they are very short.

You are not alone - I totally feel the same way you do.

While my aunt put together a nice Christmas for us, it was very difficult because BOTH my grandparents passed away this year. It just wasn't the same without them.

I also miss my childhood Christmas'. They just seemed so much more special. I remember it snowing a lot more on Christmas. We lived on a nice cul-de-sac and all of us kids (there had to be about 15 of us) used to go Christmas caroling. Our house was full of neighbors and family. My parents are now divorced, my brother and my father live out of state, etc. Also, I don't even have that family home to go back to.

In addition, my family was a lot more religious than I have raised my own children to be. As kids, we were so into the whole story of Christmas. My kids have no clue - which is sickening to me - not that I am hugely religious but I do have some faith. After feeling so guilty this year about them just wanting Santa to come and not knowing much else, I have vowed to myself that I am going to start taking them to church and bringing some religion in their lives.

Anyway, I am very disappointed also this year, and now with my grandparents gone - I don't know- I'm just speechless.

Thank you - this was like a therapy session!

Yes you are definitely not alone. Although I had a really nice Christmas, it was just a few of us and will be until we start having kids. Years ago there were cousins, grandparents, aunts, uncles, etc. Now, due to deaths, people moving and family drama, it's very different. Nice, but different and sometimes depressing.

Not nearly as 'magical" or as long-lasting as it was when I was younger.

My cousins and I would play some of the games we got for Christmas...we would run around like lunatics outside playing games...it was nice

It was a lot more magical but its still fun now
