I would just apply. Non-profits usually have the same types of positions as for profits. It's been my experience that pay is lower but benefits and working environment is much better. I am currently at a non-profit but with what I save on benefits my salary works out to be the same and I have no stress like the other place.

PS don't be fooled though. non profits still run as a business and money is still the bottom line.

No i get that, and thats fine. Money is always the bottom line. Difference I hear is the work environment tends to be less toxic.

. It is so much better. My last job people were hostile, threatening and constantly verbally abusive and nothing was done about it, even with formal complaints. That was a for profit. I have been at my new employer since May and have not experienced any of this, even with clients.

I currently volunteer with a wonderful non-profit and I am definitely aiming to get into the field. There's a lot of different things you can do such as fundraising, grant writing, programs, etc.

Good Luck!

I know at my agency we really prefer to hire the people with the not for profit experience, for a variety of reasons. That being said your best bet is to network with people you know that work in the fields you might be intertested in. The work tends to be niche so if you have a certain skill or asset focus on that. GL, I could never do the corporate thing!

I could see this being an issue with certain applicants. I also think I recall from your posts the population you work with so am aware the pay is going to be pretty low and it is what it is. Its interesting though because where I work now, I have found that some people who have worked here forever complain about the pay and the job, yet coming from a crazy for-profit agency I appreciate my job all that much more and when they complain I think they just have no clue Chat Icon

I was not talking about entry level positions but administrative positions being niche. Our agency is small and prides itself on being one of the top payers in the field from entry level on up. I drive about 100 miles a day (round trip) to make a great salary, have awesome benefits, flexibility AND do work I love. If I worked in Suffolk or for some of the larger agencies in my same position I would have to take a 25-33% pay cut. We have people here with MSW's making a lot more doing administrative work than they would be paid as a social worker in a traditional setting like a hospital or nursing home.

I never said you were. I also obviously know the importance of networking. It's how I've gotten the majority of my professional jobs, including my current. The position I had previously I created and was unique to our agency so I know all about niche positions too. In general, I was responding to the OP question about environment and overall addressing peoples questions about some potential differences in pay. Also again this is not always the case. I know people who work at non profits who make well over 6 figures.
