How does unemployment work in NYS?

DH got unemployment in NJ, so I know how that works, but how does it work in NY?

What are the rules? How are you eligible? Things are going really poorly at my job for me and normally I would just give my two weeks and leave and get a new job, but I am 31 weeks pregnant.

I think basically you can only draw unemployment if you are ready adn willing to get another job- which would mean when you have the baby and are "disabled" you wouldn't be able to draw it.. you'd have to take disability- which isn't a lot.
also- I'm not sure if you can quit and take unemployement- you have to be terminated- and I also know they check to see if you are looking for another job and they interview you too....

I don't think you are eligible if you willingly leave your job.

You need to be unemployed due to losing your job-- getting fired, or laid off (lack of work).

Your employer pays for your unemployment-- so, if you willingly leave, I doubt they would pay for your unemployment.

The above posters are right.... I do know that the exception is if your employer is not paying you for hours worked. A few years ago, DH worked for a social service agency and they were 3 paychecks behind. So DH resigned, filed for unemployment and they did an investigation. They accepted his claim, paid him unemployment while he looked for another job.

It is not that easy to get it in NYS, you have to jump through hoops and be either terminated, fired or laid off. Anything else and you will get denied. You also have to attest that you are ready and willing to work, if you say you aren't or lie its a felony.

eta: For instance I keep a spreadsheet of every job I have applied to and every interview I have been on, my state worker can ask for this proof at anytime. In fact, I have to show it to my worker tommorrow morning.
