How far along were you

when you got the epidural? I've been watching a lamaze video and the lady encourages you to wait until 5 centimeters. She said that and epidural "can" slow down the birth process, but if you can hold off until 5cm then you should be fine. Just wondering when everyone had theirs and if it took a long time afterwards to deliver or have any complications.

They would not give it to me until I was at least 4cm.

ETA: Wanted to add that I never went past 4cm but I don't think it was due to the epi at all - it took me over 24 hrs to progress to 4cm on my own while being induced.

I think I was at 3. But I went from 3-10 in 2 hours Chat Icon It didn't slow mine down one bit! My doctors policy is if you're in pain you can get one. They don't believe in waiting out the 4cm rule......

Re: How far along were you

From the moment I was induced, my doctor and the nurses kept telling me 'Just let us know when you want the epidural.' I finally got it when the contractions were coming without a break, and I was about 2 cm. I never dilated more than that and got a c-section.

The anthestesiologist told me there is still debate over whether the epidural slows labor. Some say it relaxes the mother, allowing her to dilate more.

I was induced too, and the nurses kept saying the same thing to me. I kept saying no until I thought they wouldn't offer again.

When I got to the hospital I was already 7 cm and the contractions were really bad, so I begged for the epi and got it in like 1/2 hour. I went to 10 cm in less than 2 hours.

By the time I was admitted I was 5-6cm and they offered it and I accepted it Chat Icon , but I had to receive a full bad of fluids before I could receive the epi and by that time I was between 6-7 and to honest I probably could have done it without it because by the time I received it and starated to push I think their was only an hour and half inbetween

Re: How far along were you

Nearly 10Chat Icon ...seriously....they induced me and I progressed really fast...I begged for them to give it to me and they did...Doc said he would not have if it was my second as I was nearly there.....

Kind of wish I didnt have it as it definitely slowed things down for me.....but then dont know if I would want the memory of feeling out of control for the birth..I think I will do without it for my next one as I will be more prepared and know what to expect...

I got mine at 8 cm and delivered in about 90 minutes. I don't think it slowed anything down.

Well the lady's point was that it would slow things down if you weren't as far along. That's why she encourages woman to wait until 5 cm.

I was 3-4cm when I was admitted and got my epidural about 30mins later. My labor progressed normally I don't think the epidural slowed down my labor at all.

I believe I was somewhere around 4 or 5cm. I don't think it slowed me down, except for the fact that I slept for a bit! Chat Icon

Re: How far along were you

I think I was around 7-8cm. I was progressing slowly so they wanted to give me pitcoin, and I didn't want the pitocin without an epi, so thats when I asked for it.

Re: How far along were you

I was at 7 cm- yikes!!! It was a busy day in the l and d unit. So many people having babies at the same time. They pushed me to the back burner because I wasnt screaming at them- I thinkChat Icon By the time the Dr came in to give it to me- I was practically kissing the guys feet.

eta- that by the time they gave it to me I couldnt really enjoy the down time becuase I felt like I had to push about an hour or so afterwards- it def didnt slow things down for me- I think it sped it up.

I never got one. I showed up at the hospital 5cm with my first & 10cm with my second.

I heard it slowed down labor too which was one of my reasons to forgo it. I was trying for the "ripping the bandaid off" approach - just get it over with quickly.

Good luck!
