If I get a fare that sounds decent, I will book it as soon as possible. There's always talk about an increase due to higher fuel costs so I keep that in mind.

I know Southwest has some sort of DING software you can download and lets you know about specials.
Jet Blue will give you a credit if the fare goes down.
I am not sure of others.

All the big sites... expedia, travelocity, orbitz I think offer something like this.. where you plug in your trip and it sends you updates if the fare goes down.

You can usually sign up on the airlines website to notify you of good airfares. I usually try to book as far in advance as I can but if I see that the airfare is high, I usually wait it out hoping they drop it. This of course does not always work.

I use Southwest Ding and get really great prices ($65 one way to FL). You have to keep checking every day and in some cases I book the outward and have to wait a few weeks for the fares on the return to come available. It's definitely worth it.

I try to book as far in advance as possible. We've been burned a few times when we wait on making a decision, and then come back to book and the prices have risen, or certain discount fares are no longer available.

I know Continental does the same thing.
I tend to book as far in advance as possible (unless the fares look ridiculously high and then I wait it out).
ETA - I also wait, if it's a market served by SouthWest or JetBlue, for their fares to come out as well prior to booking since they come out only 6 months or so in advance.
