How fast do you go on the treadmill?
I was walking at 4.2 and running for 5.5 (alternating every 1/4 of a mile) I do this for about 30-35 minutes. I felt like this was good....
Then I went for a run with DH yesterday outside and I felt like someone off the biggest loser.
I heard interval training is the best thing to do on the treadmill- how fast do you go?

I do about the same... I walk at 3.9... then run at 5.7.
I think running outside is TOTALLY different than the treadmill.
ETA-- I am a beginner as well... and today I did 6.0!
I also switch off from running longer stretches, to the interval training.
Oh, and I also run at a 1.0 incline.

you are running at about 11 minute mile pace. most men can run faster than that, so by comparison you are already "slow".
running is totally different outside. it's harder on the body, more exertion...it's more tiring.
I usually do a straight run, anywhere from 5.8 to 6.4 on the tready.
I run about a 9:40 pace over 3 miles...better if i've been running a lot, not as good if it's sporadic.
to give you a guide, I think the military requirement for a woman is running a mile in 10 mins or under....I could be wrong though.
go at your own pace and your stamina will build.
I am shooting a less than 9:30 mm over 3 miles. hopefully I'll get there by winter!

if i'm doing an easy run i do between 5.5 and 5.7. if you just started running i think you are doing great at 5.5! running outside is definitely much different especially if you haven't really done it before. i wouldn't even compare the two. just run at a pace you're comfortable at and slowly you'll get better and faster. and try to mix up your workouts a little too. different paces for different amounts of time, some days completely easy, some days really hard etc.

I walk around 4.2 and usually keep my running between 6.2 -6.5. I try to do some intervals of sprints in there to, but I don't usually go over 7.2. I'm always afraid that I'm going to fall off the treadmill.

today i pushed myself- warmed up at 4.2 than ran at 5.2 for 1/4 - then up to 6.5 for 1/4 - repeated that for 2.5 miles. I really felt great when I was done.
I'm going to try and keep this up!!

I start at about 5.5 and go up to 6.5 miles an hour. I go up and down and down but try not to dip under 6.0 after the first mile. I run 4-5 miles a day and if I run "slow" it will take forever.

Like others have said treadmill running and outdoor running is very different. The surface you are running, the temperature outdoors, the terrain all affect outdoor running. On a treadmill you set the spead and you go...there is also a belt remember so if you are setting the treadmill at a 6.0...you aren't exactly running a 10 minute mile...the belt is helping you a little...and unless you change the incline...a 0% is almost the same as going downhill.
For me, I worked my way up but I run a 7.0-8.0 when I am training for a race....or need a tougher workout. When I am crosstraining I run a 6.5 because the things I do tire me a out a bit. Intervals are the best but I would try to get your heart rate up faster...increase your speed slowly...and increase the incline to 1%.
Also remember you don't have a machine keeping your pace...you could have started out too fast which many people do. When you run outside you should be very uncomfortable for the first 10 minutes and starting off slow...uncomfortably slow and then pick it up. You start out too fast and you will only last that 10 minutes.

I walk at 4.5-5.5. I jog 5.5-6.5. Run 6.5-10. I keep the incline at 2 and go up from there. I never keep the speed or incline steady because I get too bored. When I am walking or jogging I increase the incline. WHen I am running fast I lower the incline but not below 2. I like running at apeed 6-6.5 and doing bursts of speed at 8-9. I find it much easier to run outside though.

Damn I am pretty miserable on the treadmill compared to the other responses.
I walk at 3.9 and jog at 5.4. The incline is usually somewhere between 2 and 3.
I don't run - I don't have that kind of stamina YET!
