How hard is it for a child to start a new school in grade 1 rather than Kindergarten?

Looking to move next year and even though we hope to be in the house by next fall I may have to keep dd in the school near the sitter for one more year bc of before and after care issues. Are there lots iof kids who dont go to the local school until grade 1? We are moving to Li and my sil said that a lot of times parents send the kid to K in the local catholic school bc its full day so that in 1st grade there will be lots of new kids? Any thought

In our district, all the kids start new for grade 1 because kindergarten is in one building and the kids branch out to 4 different elementary schools based on where they live.

They are so adaptable at that age, I really don't think it would be a problem.

My dd went to kindergarten at a catholic school for FT kindergarten for a # of reasons, we decided to move her into the public school. Although we loved the catholic school, the school was very small and there was only goingto be 1 first grade. we decided if we were to make the move, it had to be this year. For the first week of school, my daughter cried at night begging us to go back to her other school. It broke my heart, I was crying with her. I told her that what she remembered at the old school wasn't the same, the children she knew were no longer there - as they went to other public schools as well.

Well now we're into week 3 and she's seemed to have adjusted and hasn't asked about the other school.

Everything is an adjustment and they do just fine!

SD was in Ohio for K and NY for 1st....her biggest adjustment problem was that the K was from 9-12:30 and 1st was a full day (really long...8:45-3:15). Other than that she was totally fine.
