It depends on what your Dr recommends.
My Dr recommended we do half ICSI and it was worth every cent b/c only the eggs that were ICSI fertilized for us.

I agree with this as well. The dr should really guide you. I would think if you have no male factor, it wouldnt be necessary but if your eggs cant be penetrated, ICSI might be necessary.

Is it less if you just do half? Our Dr sggested only half. When it came time to the actual procedure, I gave them override rights. Because DH's count was poor, they decided to do ICSI on all. i havent gotten a bill yet. Chat Icon

When I did my ivf cycle they automatically did all ICIS and out of 19 eggs taken, one had a broken shell and had to be discarded, but all of the remaining 18 were fertilized.

So I have nothing to compare it to, but I liked that they picked a good sperm and injected it right into the egg.

Good luck!

I can't give you any advice from experience but I've been doing a lot of research and it seems ICSI can really up your chances regardless of your dx. I would ask your dr though--he probably has the best answer. good luck!!!!

We have no male factor but it was recommended every time. If you have had failed IVFs before it is recommended regardless of male factor. I would check with insurance again. Hopefully the person you spoke to gave you incorrect info. GL!

we did ICSI and had all 18 of our eggs fertilize. we have slight morphology and AFS did ICSI standard so that was great for us. if you have no male factor and have to pay OOP i would probably take the chance and pass on it, esp. if you've had MC before that wasn't chemical. if youve had MC you know that the healthy sperm can penetrate the egg successfully so I would think ICSI would be less crucial to a good outcome.

My RE requested us to do 1/2 ICSI but after we got the approval from GHI i figured why not do them all ICSI? It cant hurt, they pick the best looking sperm to inject into the egg. We had 16 eggs retrieved and 11 of those fertilized.

2K is alot to have to pay, on top of everything else. I think you should talk to your RE and discuss if you really need to do it.

Re: how important is ICSI...this cycle is driving me nuts!

i had a miscarriage before due to iui where two sperm entered the egg and fertilized and then i mcd around 9 weeks.
becaue of that i wanted icsi so i knew only one sperm and one egg would meet.

also it depends how many eggs you get i think...
i only got 2 so had to make sure those two were fertilized properly! gl!

We have MF and have done 3 IVFs. My natural fertilization were always better quality. First round all ICSI and had very poor embryo quality and a bfn. Second, we did half ICSI and the natural were by far better and wound up transferring them - got pregnant, but miscarried. Third did all natural...got awesome embryos even had some to freeze. Had a chemical. I think it's different for everyone, but evidently we get better embryos with natural even with MF. I'm still not pregnant, but found out I had endo and a clotting disorder after 3rd cycle. Good Luck!!

Re: how important is ICSI...this cycle is driving me nuts!

Since you dont have male factor issues, a lot depends on how many eggs you have as well. With few eggs, you will want as many to fertilize as possible. For my first ivf cycle we had 30 follicles but just 9 eggs. We did icsi and 4 fertilized. It's ridiculous that insurance only considers male factor with icsi. I would say tell the embryologist to do icsi or not depending on how many eggs you ultimately get retrieved. You can't depend on the number of follies you have to determine how many eggs you will get. There's no way to know till the ER.
