How is it that men can do this?
We are getting a pretty decent tax return. DH and I agreed long beforehand that the money would be used for home improvements and furniture that we desperately need.
DH is going to buy himself a new computer using part of the money and part of his savings. His is 3 years old and running great. This is not something new. Because we are computer techs we both like to stay on top of technology (him more than me though) so he gets a new high end PC every 3 yrs or so. I totally understand that part of it.
What I don't understand is how he doesn't feel guilty about spending $3000 on a toy for himself when there is so much work that needs to be done in the house. Yes, right now we can spare it (I guess) ) but still...*I* would feel soooo guilty spending all that money on MYSELF. I don't think I could ever spend that much on myself for something that is not a necessity knowing our current finances and the work that the house needs.
But he's totally okay with it. How IS that?

all men feel guilty, but we all have a very forgiving nature
i can see your point though. We actually owed this year, but I won some cash from fantasy football, and I am putting it toward the house

wow...I see DH & I in this situation. he's like that too. He3 got a very hefty X-mass bonus & we had decided to put most away & spend some on Marissa. Ok...tell me why he used it all on himself towards his X-Box and some computer stuff. I wanted to beat him.

hmm.. does he need this computer for work or is it just because? 3k is alot for a PC.. that's nuts! I totally understand where you are coming from (that is if it's just a toy and not a necessity for work). I'd be peeved too!

Same here....I actually reiterate what we are using the tax refund for and ask to please don't get any ideas, and that we both need to be on the SAME page about it. (in one ear out the other)--then I feel like the mean wife! When we have extra cash, i feel too guilty to spend on me...and him, he is speeding over to home depot!

3k for a computer is insanely priced. And I am a computer guy. Is that just for the PC itself? Or does that at least include a monitor?
I could build a bad-a$$ PC for under $1500.

I was going to say as a tech guy couldn't he buy the parts and upgrades and make his machine up to date for a lot less than 3k?

If its just the PC he is getting... yeah you can do something very good in the 1500-2000 range.
But if he is getting a flat LCD monitor as well... that can signigicantly add to the price.

Re: How is it that men can do this?
Nah...see we are both computer techs. I understand why he wants to get what he wants to get.
He already has the 24" flat panel.
He wants the new NVIDIA (I mean NEW like the one that came out yesterday - the 7800, I think?) or the new ATI card and wants to run 2 cards (SLI) so he needs the new MB the new CPU, the whole bit. I totally understand he wants a top of the line machine. I get that.
I just don't get that he feels it's justified...I couldn't spend 3k on myself like that! And believe me, I would LOVE to spend that on a new wardrobe and shoes!
Technically, no he doesn't need that much power for work.

Then if that's the case, I wouldn't want him buying a 3k pc. Sorry.
