How is Melville or South Huntington to live and what schools?
Just curious about the specifics of Melville as well as South Huntington Is it a nice town, what schools are good, LIRR close?
Any details from anyone who lives there would be great.
Thanks! ETA: South Huntington info

Re: How is Melville to live and what schools?
Melville is awesome. Lived here or near here my whole life. It is a large area though - encompasses two school districts, Half Hollow Hills (5) and South Huntington (13). Most of Melville is close to all major highways and shopping (although the part of Melville near Dix Hills is a little further away, it is actually the more expensive area).

Is one school district better then the other or does it matter? Also, what is the triangle section?

Re: How is Melville or South Huntington to live and what schools?
I too have lived in the area all my life. The triangle is in South Huntington School District #13 (it is the area bordered by Wolf Hill Road, New York Avenue and Old Country Road). I live in South Huntington (which is anything south of Jericho Turnpike and north of Wolf Hill Road). I grew up in Dix Hills and went to Half Hollow Hills School District #5. HHH is supposed to be the "better" district. That having been said, there are problems in ANY school district, including HHH. I saw them (albeit it was many years ago). My children will be going to South Huntington, as did my cousins.
As for the area, it's lovely. Lots of parks to play in for the kids. The South Huntington library (only about 4 or 5 years old) is amazing. It is close to the major parkways and shopping, as well as many houses of worship. It is also close to Huntington Village with many restaurants and cultural activities.
Like I said, I am a bit biased as I grew up here, and other than going away for college and graduate school, have lived here all my life and have chosen to raise my children here. If I can answer any other questions, please feel free to let me know.

Re: How is Melville or South Huntington to live and what schools?
I live in South Huntington and love it! South Huntington and the Melville Triangle is all South Huntington Schools. I have friends with children in the district and they cant say enough great things about it (We are expecting our first child in Sept and our Children will go to the same schools).
It's such a quiet area, yet so close to everything. I am 7 min's from the train and village which has a ton of great Restaurants and stores. I am also right by Walt Whitman which is a wonderful mall.
The Library is beutiful and they have so many events that take place for the residents and a ton of stuff for kids during the week and on weekends.
I highly recommend the area, S. Huntington or Melville you can't go wrong
Any questions, let me know.

I live in Melville in the Triangle section and love it. I commute on the LIRR everyday-----it's a 1 hour ride if u catch an express. We're close---but not too close---to shopping, restaurants, etc. Nice neighborhoods!

DH and I are looking in this area too. I just read in Newsday that the South Huntington HS Principal just won Top Principal of the Year in NY State.
He has apparently really done a great job making this school a great place!! It seems they had some troubles in the past?

If you are looking in Melville try to get in to the Half Hollow Hills district - its a great district I graduated there in 99

While HHH is considered the "better" district, I agree with all the very positive things posted by others about South Huntington. I grew up here, went to the schools and now live in the district and love it. You can't go wrong!

I'm also a South Huntington Grad- Whitman! The district was good when I was there but HHH was always considered the better district. By better, I mean more APs, more Westinghouse finalists, more students that went on and graduated from 4 year schools, etc.
the disctrict was getting worse as I graduated but seems to have turned around a little. I've been out of school for quite some time but my niece is in 3rd grade at Oakwood? ) and loves it and has a great mix of friends!
