How long after (Update)

giving motrin does a fever break?

Ry woke up w/ a 102.9 @ 4- I gave him tylenol and a luke warm bath- and yet we have gone down past 101.3Chat Icon

Update- He seems to be holding anywhere from 101.3-102.3

I took him to the Dr on call, who said everything is clear... and more than likely is viral plus teething ...

He said it COULD be Roseola.... and we would know if a rash breaks out after the fever breaks!Chat Icon

Re: How long after

If the fever is bad enough, it will not go down right away. When this happened to Emily the doc recommended us piggybacking tylenol and motrin. You can give them an hour apart from eachother, although that's for the first dosage. Then it's tylenol every 4 and motri every 6. We had to do this when she had coxsackie since the fever was so bad!

Re: How long after

Medicine won't break a fever completely. It will drop it a degree or two, but that's about it. Fevers are good though, it means the body is effectively fighting it. I know it's hard to see them sick though.Chat Icon

Motrin does work a little better, I think. Also, it lasts longer.

When we had the week of high fevers, it never broke -only lowered it to 101-102. It worked within a half hour for us.Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Marissa, this is how Julia was acting and I thought she was sick too (her temp was 102.5), but it ended up being her teeth, shes getting her molars in....

Do you think it could be teething?

Yep, that happens! Chat Icon Either once the fever starts to break, he may have a cold or he may get one of those rashes from a virus. Most likely it's just a virus. Just keep an eye on his ears.

Well- let me tell ya- he just cut his top molars last week, and I know those bottoms are coming as well- I would 100% think teeth BUT I just thought almost 103 was a little high for a teething fever- KWIM?

(Normally I would wait until tomorrow BUT I have an absolute mandatory meeting tomorrow that I CAN NOT MISS or basically Ill be fired- so I wanna take him today)

If it is Roseola, he will have a high temperature for a few days and then a rash will come out of his back. Once the rash comes, he is no longer contagious.

I hope he feels better soonChat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: How long after (Update)

Oh my goodness I am so glad you posted this. DS went to Dr Friday got a clean bill of health no ear, nose, throat probs... but Dr said teething badly! Then he woke up yesterday with 102! I know kids get temps with teething but 102 is a little high. anyway by the evening he had 103.3. I did the bath and meds but the temp has only gone down to 102.2 and seems to be holding. I guess it is just something going around huh?
Hope your little one is better soon!Chat Icon

Re: How long after (Update)

Im going with a big part of it is teeth, and the other part is viral- BUt in the meantime his fever is holding between 101-102.?Chat Icon Chat Icon

It dosent seem to be effecting him- just making me a little crazy...

My boss suggested me giving him a feverall suppository- do you think I should? Or do I want the fever to continue to fight whatever he is fighting?

That's how Miranda was when she was first sick (before she got the pneumonia). It actually took an entire week for her fever to go away.
Hope he feels better soon.

No I don't think one had anything to do with the other.
I was just trying to say that before her pneumonia she just had a viral infection with a fever. I think she picked something up from me and DH after that developed into the pneumonia.
