How long are cats normally in heat?

I have a one year old kitten. She has been in heat 3 times the past 2 months. I know I need to get her fixed and that was our plan this week, please no flames, I am 9 months pregnant and we just moved into our new house last week and the local vets only have drop offs for spaying at certain times and DH and I both work so being able to take her in has been next to impossible. After the last time she went into heat (2 WEEKS AGO!) we felt so bad for her and the meowing was insane that we planned to take her today but lo and behold on Friday night she went into heat again now I have to wait to take her until she's not in heat anymore.
That last times, it only lasted a few days, I feel like she should be done by now but every time I think she is over, the meowing and howling in the middle of the night starts up again.

Does it get longer each time? And does anyone know how long I have to wait after she's done in order to take her in?

TIA

Re: How long are cats normally in heat?

Cats go into heat every two or three weeks in season (which is several months long), so it's normal that she went into heat again 2 weeks later. I would take her right away as soon as this heat cycle stops - or else you will wind up with a cat in heat again in a couple of weeks and have to wait longer. They are usually only in heat for a couple of days, though. If she seems to be having abnormally long heat cycles (more than 3 or 4 days at a time), I would call the vet...

Thanks for the response! This morning she was howling again but ever since 7am she hasn't done it or stuck her tail up in the air lol so I am hoping that she is done and I can take her in tomorrow... poor girl and poor DH who has to wake up at 5 am everyday and hasn't been getting much sleep these past few days lol

Ok I lied, she just walked into the living room (there is no a/c in there) and started howling like a crazy woman! ARGGGG

I've been trying to get Island Rescue on the phone to see how much this is going to cost me but the line has been busy. I called Babylon Animal Hospital and its $160, an overnight stay, $20 for pain meds, plus they need to have a rabies vac. Who knew rescuing a 5 week old kitten that was outside all by herself last year (a neighbor found her stuck in the break pad of an abandoned car) would end up costing so much lol. She is a keeper though

Try the North Shore Animal League Medical Center. They have really good prices on spay/neuter... They neutered my cats and spayed one of my late dogs.

Here are their rates.

I use a different vet for regular stuff - but I have had to use NSAL a couple of times (for spay / neuter of pets I got there and for a medical issue that arose quickly after adoption -- b/c treatment was free). I never had a problem with any of the vets. They were all nice, professional, and competent.

Hope you are able to get it done quickly. It really is the MOST awful sound. Chat Icon Chat Icon
