How long did it take you to housebreak your puppy?
We've had Kobie for 2 weeks tomorrow (he will be 10 weeks old) and I'm starting to go a little crazy with the housebreaking situation. Everytime I feel like we're making progress he goes peeps inside the house. We're crate training him but whenever we're just hanging out with him and he gets crazy he'll have an accident.
Suggestions would be appreciated for my sanity!!!!

My dog did that too!! When they have fun and get nuts they are like little kids, they FORGET and just let it loose! They get so excited they cant hold it, you cant blame the babes.

Re: How long did it take you to housebreak your puppy?
J, Lexi is 2 and a half and she STILL has accidents.
My two are best when I'm on top of them. Every time we play, right after, I let them right out to pee. After we've been in the house a while, I let them out. If I regularly let them out every 2 hours or so, they are fine and go outside. I can only blame myself when they do have accidents because it's usually because I'm slacking and preoccupied doing something.
Don't get frustrated... keep working on it, and Kobie will do his business outside like a good little pup.
Isn't he so much fun? I can't wait to meet him!!!

Each dog was different, but on average I'd say about 1 month.

Casey was trained at about 12 weeks (got her at 10 weeks!) But Goldens / Labs are good at that.

Re: How long did it take you to housebreak your puppy?
Our first dog we did not crate train and it took a while to house break her...mainly b/c at the time she lived with DH and his brother and they worked long hours and she was alone most of the day...so with her it took about 6 months.
Our puppy we crate trained...she never had an accident in her crate and we worked hard to make sure that after she ate we would take her outside until she went potty. and then every hour or so after that the same. She had a few accidents in the house, but she got it after about two months. We have had her 9 months now and we no longer use the crate...she has not had any accidents and is free to roam the house! ETA: we adopted her from a local shelter at 7 months old...she was a stray, so it was difficult in the beggining to break the "i'll go anywhere I want" mentality.

God, I hope this is right - I'm already dying with the number of times our puppy will take a drink and then 5 min later pee on the kitchen floor.

We got our dog when he was 3 months. It took about 2 months for him to totally stop having accidents. We would walk him extremely often to get him to understand that he had to go outside.

Re: How long did it take you to housebreak your puppy?
To crate train my dogs I kept them in their crates almost all the time until they were trained and it didnt take long, maybe a week or so. I would let them out and played with them but I would bring them to the "potty" every 30 min. or so. It seems mean but the best way to do it is to keep them crated except for bathroom time and very short play time.

Buy a spray that oxidizes the pee. Go to Petco...Natures Miracle or Oxyquick or something like that so you can spray after pup goes, then wipe up. Will help to not leave a scent of the pee.

Even for tile floor? We've just wiped it up, then rinsed with hot water.

No I wouldnt worry so much about a tile floor. You can also make a mixture of vinegar and water to clean up peepee.
We have hardwood that dont have the greatest seal on them, plus some throw rugs. So that spray is best for those things.
A tile floor isnt really an issue, unless they pee on an area where the grout is kind of destroyed and it could seep down, kwim?

Re: How long did it take you to housebreak your puppy?
We have two Boston Terriers. The older on is very smart. Took less than a month to housebreak her + she rings a bell to be let out (that took only 3 days for her to learn.) The younger one is all heart-no brain. I love her to pieces, and for the most part she's housebroken, but still has accidents. Thankfully every room of the house has hardwoods now. She's 10 mos old and about 90% housebroken, little stinker. Hopefully she'll be 100% someday, we will never quit trying to get her there.

Oh, ok! We have nature's miracle cause she's peed a few times on a throw rug we have by the door to catch the mud, grass we track in, but as soon as she's fully trained, that rug is being thrown out.
