How long do you have to be a mama before you stop worrying about germs and getting sick?

I've always been a germaphobe, but since DD was born I have become OBSESSED. I can't even get into the holiday spirit about our drive up to LI because I cant stop thinking "I hope no one is sick, I hope DD doesn't get sick" Chat Icon

I know the day will come when she'll be sick the entire winter on and off, but I feel like I have some kind of control now and it takes over my brain.

She's had a cold and it didn't bother HER in the least!

When will this worrying stop? Any words of wisdom to snap me out of this??

For my kids the worrying stopped after the first month of daycare. I realized there is nothing I can do to stop it.

Now that we went through our first high fever and ear infection - I worry about that happening again. A regular cold is a cake walk compared to that and teething!

I completely agree. It doesn't even bother me when DD is around another kid who is coughing or sneezing. I'm sure she's around worse at daycare every day.

DD is sick now and I'm hoping that will help her to sleep a little longer during our drive to LI.

A long time. I did not put DS in a shopping cart until he was 3 yo. We used his stroller and I was dragging a shopping cart behind me.Chat Icon

This year when he was two and his first cold of the season did not turn into a Asthmatic nightmare. Although he has been sick several times this season...none that really warranted an emergency visit to the doc.

im about to get over it real quick Chat Icon ds got his first round of shots last week & we are going to a friends house tonight & their son has a cough -- granted he wont be holding ds, but i just dont really think its nesscesary anymore to try and avoid germs in that case... ds will be in daycare in a month & i wont be able to do anything about it after that

of course if you have the flu, i wouldnt want you holding my child, but a runny nose isnt going to stop me from going someplace

If you're my SIL apparently forever.
Me, I was never a germaphobe. My kids get the occasional cold and such but I don't freak about germs and dirt, etc. I never really did. I was just very careful when they were newborns, that's about it.

Re: How long do you have to be a mama before you stop worrying about germs and getting sick?

I was like this for a while but then I realized that no matter what i do- she is going to get sick.
Luckily she has only had one cold so far- knock on wood.
My husband and I have both been sick with colds that she didn't catch.
And a few weeks ago I had the most wretched stomach virus of my life and she didn't even catch that.

So just be vigilant- wash your hands, purell etc but don't go crazy.

In the end no matter how careful you are they will get sick. It stinks yes, but it's part of life

I never ever worry about germs and the like, and I have the two kids who NEVER get sick!

I would just relax and remember, if they are going to get something, you can't stop it, they are going to get it.

DS is 16 mos and I still worry. Not as much as a year ago, but I'm not of the "If he gets sick, he gets sick" mentality.

Ditto this! I am a germaphobe when it comes to things like public bathrooms etc.

At first I was nervous about DS getting sick. Now that DS is no longer a newborn I am over it. Although at times it sucks it is good for their immunity and is going to happen no matter how much you try to prevent it Chat Icon

I try telling myself that over and over "it's good for her immune system" but it only temporarily halts the stress.

Can't wait for spring and the end of c&f season! Chat Icon

ITA. I have never worried... not even when they were newborns. They both have only had a few short colds each. They are 3 and 4 years old and never even needed to go to the doctors for any colds and have never needed any meds.

DD has asthma and so every little cold really affects her so I am still worried about germs big time and she is 4.5. LOL. Starting prek last year and continuing this year has been a nightmare. She was always so healthy before she started school.Chat Icon

I stop worrying at about 4-5 months old. Kids need to get colds, that is how you build an immune system.
